Yokohama, Japan: Japan on Tuesday unveiled its biggest warship since World War II, a huge flat-top destroyer that has raised eyebrows in China and elsewhere because it bears a strong resemblance to a conventional aircraft carrier.

The ship, which has a flight deck that is nearly 250 metres (820 feet) long, is designed to carry up to 14 helicopters. Japanese officials say it will be used in national defence — particularly in anti-submarine warfare and border-area surveillance missions — and to bolster the nation's ability to transport personnel and supplies in response to large-scale natural disasters, like the devastating earthquake and tsunami in 2011.

The new Japanese Prime Minister is a Nationalist has had made it clear
he intends to introduce a constitutional change to permit Japan to build
a full military that could be a cause for concern

Just because Canada doesn't have a proper military with which to defend itself, and would have to rely on the US and UK if it gets into trouble, doesn't mean that other countries can't.

That Japanese ship is a bit puny, though.

The Royal Navy's HMS Ocean can carrry up to 40 vehicles.

Sorry.

You have a "navy" of 15 warships and an airforce of just 391 planes.

It's hardly enough to defend yourselves should you ever need to, and yet you complain when one country does the RIGHT thing in these dangerous times and strengthens its military.

Should Canada get into trouble it'll go crying to America and Britain.

I think this a great move on Japan part, creates jobs and lets the countries around them know.. they are ready to defend their sovereignty.

North Korea has made numerous threats towards Japan.. a few nukes and some real firepower, may give them pause next time they want to shoot off their mouth.

Sorry for you... We have a long gun registry in Canada... Any miscreants bent on invading would be stopped and forced to register - wait 4-6 weeks and then, maybe, get their guns back.

Are you saying Canadians are armed which would make a civilian militia something to worry about if trying to make your way 3500 miles across country?

All of Asia is increasing their defence capability. Reasoning is quite clear.

Given how North Korea has been acting for the last couple years cant say I blame him.

Rely on the UK? Hahaha

And the US? Really, even if the US wasnt next door we are pretty well defended by three big oceans.

Usually its the other way around. Both World Wars for example. You folks wanted our help, not the other way around. We have never been in direct trouble since we have been a country. Last time would have been 1812 when Canada didnt exist. We have a small armed forces because a large one is just not needed.

"Canada" has never been at war with Rwanada. Canada has never fought a war against Rwanada. So how about you elaborate and explain how this comes even close to the examples given of the USSR in Afghanistan and the u.s. in Vietnam.
