Asylum-seekers arriving by boat will no longer be resettled in Australia but will go to Papua New Guinea, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has announced.

The news came as Mr Rudd set out an overhaul of asylum policy ahead of a general election expected shortly.

Australia has seen a sharp rise in the number of asylum-seekers arriving by boat in recent months.

Following the news, rioting reportedly broke out at an asylum centre in Nauru. It was unclear if there was a link. Thousands of asylum seekers attempt to reach Australia by boat every year.

"Police have been called in to help with a major disturbance at the asylum seeker detention centre on Nauru," the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported.

Not quite sure why Mr. Rudd is trying to dictate foreign policy for another sovereign nation. "After being ruled by three external powers since 1884, Papua New Guinea gained its independence from Australia in 1975. It became a separate Commonwealth realm with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II reigning as the Queen of Papua New Guinea." Wikipedia

Papua is already crowded with it's own native population and may not appreciate the added burden of refugees from a less impoverished nation.

They struck a deal with the relocation... Nobody forced them to take them as far as I am aware.

And I say good on em. Canada and the US should do the same. Why should these people get a free refugee claim the moment they land, or get pushed through the system faster when there are countless others who are applying the legitimate way being pushed further and further behind because countries have these random boat people at their doorstep bypassing the whole system?

If this is what people will face when they try and hop on a boat and curtail the normal process, then these idiots running the boats and taking these people's money for transport no longer have a marketing plan going for them and maybe these people will start getting in line in the normal due process like everybody else.

Nobody else has come up with a solution yet and this has been going on for years.... It's either this or keep them stored away indefinitely like what they were doing before.

It sounds to me from the article like Indonesia is a willing conduit for Australia's problem. Blame Indonesia.

Look at the ballooning numbers attached to the article. Australia had to do something.

It's an intelligence test. Any regular would-be immigrant who wants to jump the line will fly to New York or Vancouver, rent a boat, set out to sea for twenty miles or so, then turn around and come back to land, wash up on a beach, and claim refugee status.

They would have their passport 'stamped' upon arrival... Might be considered already being a visitor and exempted from benefiting from that strategy

It's about time that Britain told immigrants arriving in London by hiding somewhere in the back of lorries on trains from Paris or Brussels to get the hell out and to get rid of them pronto, too.

I guess Norfolk Island would be kinda tacky.

Norfolk island is actually a rather nice place. Think Santa Catalina.
Or in your neck of the world, Chincoteague. Misty...
