A group of defectors from Iran has cautioned that Iranian authorities believe the West has been lulled into a false sense of security by a fatwa — a pronouncement of Muslim law — by Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has said that a “nuclear bomb is a sin in Islam.” It is based on a lie, they warned, despite the Obama administration’s apparent reliance on this declaration to guide its foreign policy.

According to the Green Embassy Campaign, a collection of former Iranian diplomats who have sought political asylum abroad, Khamenei recently told an important meeting of his regime’s security and intelligence officials that his fatwa will not restrict Shiite Muslims in Iran from pursuing and building a nuclear weapon. The campaign is tied to the Green Movement in Iran, which opposes Khamenei’s reign and favors free elections.

“While God is with us and has forced Russia and China on our side, America cannot do anything,” they reported that Khamenei told the officials. “The fatwa which I gave years ago that a nuclear bomb is haram, a sin, has now become a statement of fact for the West, and because of their own needs and fears of Israel, they are emphasizing that statement.”

“However,” Khamenei continued, “the Imam’s hidden soldiers, based on their religious obligation under Shiite Islam, will continue in total secrecy and in other locations to attain the most advanced arms to defend the regime.”

The Iranian regime often refers to those who work in total secrecy as “The hidden Imam soldiers,” including intelligence agents, scientists and others busy advancing the goals of the regime and protecting it militarily. The “Imam” refers to the promised final Islamic Messiah, the Shiites’ 12th Imam Mahdi, who Shiites believe will return to Earth when Armageddon begins.

When looking for sanctuary in a Nation with a certain prejudiced view it would be smart to at least voice your support for that view. Where else are you going to get seed money for a life a luxury in your new host Nation. That you are never heard from again is a standard thing, don't worry I'm sure they are still alive.
How is the Kuwaiti girl and her family doing this 2nd decade after she stood up for a lie?

Endless sanctions helps their economy if putting people to work building 'things' means anything. When can we become a danger to the world/region and go through the same 'hardships'?

In the recent years, Iran has made great achievements in the defense sector and gained self-sufficiency in essential military hardware and defense systems.

So it shouldn't be hard for you to refute the contents of the article, instead of just dismiss it, right?

I await your point by point dissection of the article.

Bear,

That's a fair challenge and I welcome the opportunity to do so.

We saw "defectors" tells us there were innumerable WMD all over Iraq and that Saddam was about to launch WW III. Ok, that's a different subject as we know. But we are now suffering the consequences for a needless war that had no basis in reality. And just another point about that was recently raised by Colin Powell in his new book:

Colin Powell's New Book: War With Iraq Never Debated

Powell should have spoken out before and war could have been averted. Again, that's a separate issue but it shows the consequences when people rush into a war without having any actual evidence to justify military action.

In this article from "Daily Caller" we are told certain defectors are asserting that a "fatwa" against nukes don't matter and that this is a ploy by Khamenei. So where's the evidence? Were intelligence reports from Iran's military provided? Photos of weapons manufactures?? Was so much as one piece of documentation shown - just ONE??

It alleges "They reported that Khameini told officials ..." Who specifically were those officials? Where are their testimonies to confirm such an allegation?? Memos? Computer reports?? Could we have just one shred of documentation to back that up?

''The Green Embassy report indicated that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his associates were not present at the meeting because Khamenei suspected they might leak information to the outside.''

Well, how convenient that the government's leader was not present at such a critical meeting where the "Iman's hidden soldiers" were being given instructions. The Iman? The Muslim Messiah who is about to erase the world's sinners and Ahmadinejad is not made aware of his presence nor that of his special forces?? Doesn't that sound just a bit suspicious and convenient to you? After all, how many times have we been told on this forum and throughout the entire US media that Ahmadinejad is a dictator who is out to conquer the world and the entire known universe? How often has he been compared with Hitler? If he deserves that designation, then how can anyone believe that he doesn't know what's going in behind his back??

The article goes on to say, "After all, the regime has issued numerous outrageous fatwas, including one that opined on the permissibility of sex with chickens, '' ~ Hmmm ... that quote which was attributed to the right wing Weekly Standard shows ignorance of Koranic law as it is based on Mosaic law which expressly forbids bestiality. It also says that Khamenei did not make a fatwa against nukes though the historical record clearly shows he did in August 2005 in Vienna:

Yes, MEMRI, there is a Fatwa from Khamenei forbidding Nukes | Informed Comment

We discuss this previously and need not discuss it again.

Finally there's this: "According to a report from the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) Iranian opposition group, obtained Friday by newspapers in Europe and Israel, Iran is accelerating its nuclear bomb program." MEK - a terrorist group who despite many efforts in American courts to have that designation dropped still retains the "terrorist" label imposed on it by the State Department. Even Republican Bush acknowledged it as such. Therefore, it deserves no credibility and has provided no evidence to back up its claim which would have been pounced on immediately by right wingers in the USA..

Thus, the article lacks credibility in that it has these many failings shown above.
