That area of the world has long been a contentious one with smuggling ongoing for centuries-those clowns must have known that.

Would not go so far as to say they are "spys".......(even if Iran thinks so ) but hiking in that area is the height of poor judgement and arrogance. "americans' need to learn that the world is not theirs to do with as they please and get away with it.
The issue is that we certainly do not know all the facts. and if these "hikers" did something illegal......and did it with intention or silly bravado..... they should have known the consequences.
an aside: but I happen to know Two ladies from Iran . One a highly trained nurse. One a well trained hair stylist. Both are very aware of the "poltics " and follow them closely. Both also say......that the situation for the people there is not anywhere what is propagandized in the west. Yes. the gov't is very problematic.........but folks as a rule have a good quality of life, have jobs .....as long as they stay clear of illegal actions and the gov't itself. Both also indicate that much has changed and is a lot more modern in thinking and living.
.........so the upshot is ........one has to take everything our and their politicans say with a huge bucket of salt.
Now , .......this verdict is not unexpected. The writing was on the wall from the beginning.
The US would be foolish to do anything radical about these hikers. Part of the problem is that americans do believe they are exceptional and therefore demand radical and exceptional treatment. This , I suspect is part of the angst many have against the US. and may be playing a part in this "verdict".
We are not privy to the evidence presented..... or what the FACTS are. Of course the vaiable is ......how the evidence was used to achieve this verdict.
How would that help the situation?? Why nuke the place. Just do the all american thing and send in a gang of assassins . IF you think that americans adhere to the LAW any better than some of these ME fanatics...... you are deluding yourself.
It was plain STUPID to be hiking that close to the territory ....... as even if they got "lost".........they were still too close for comfort and have a responsibility for their own actions.
What Iran has done is no surprise. and could have been anticipated. So why push the boundaries ??

Considering the relationship the u.s. has with Iran, it is no surprise that these brain dead hikers would also be accused and found guilty of spying along with illegally entering Iran. It should be no surprise what so ever what the final verdict and sentence was.
