Mercedes-Benz and China .

Bjoern Hauber, executive vice president for sales and marketing at Mercedes-Benz (China) Ltd, introduces the new-generation R-Class to the Chengdu motor show.

Company executives and celebrities at the Mercedes-Benz exhibit.
As a global luxury brand, Mercedes-Benz has not limited its gaze large international metropolises.
The German auto icon is also eyeing China's smaller cities as more Chinese fulfill their dreams of a successful life.
At the 13th Chengdu Motor Show that began on September 17, Mercedes-Benz displayed a comprehensive lineup of 25 models under its Mercedes-Benz, AMG, smart and Maybach badges - the most ever for the luxury automaker at the show.
"With an unmatched heritage of nearly 125 years and continuous investment in China, Mercedes-Benz continued to maintain powerful momentum in the first eight months of the year, growing by 131 percent over last year to deliver more than 87,400 cars," said Bjoern Hauber, executive vice president for sales & marketing at Mercedes-Benz (China) Ltd.
"Chengdu's rapid growth is a true reflection of the strong potential of southwest China and we continue to attach strategic importance to the entire region," said Hauber, who participated in the Chengdu auto show for the third year.
Strong SUV lineup
China was Mercedes-Benz's third-largest market last year, contributing 12 percent of its global sales.
"We are confident of further development in China - the premier segment will definitely outpace the total vehicle market. Our target is to maintain the fastest growth in the premier segment in China," he said.
With a display area of nearly 1,600 square meters, Mercedes-Benz took center stage for its Asia premiere and China market launch of the new generation Grand Luxury Sports Tourer R-Class.
"The R-Class takes the acknowledged characteristics of vehicle categories, including the sporty sedan, estate, MPV and SUV, and fuses them together to create its own unique personality," said Hauber.
The model continues the legacy of its predecessors by featuring 4 MATIC all-wheel drive, offering the outstanding off-road performance and superior reliability of an SUV.
China became the largest market in the world for the R-Class in the first eight months of 2010.
Mercedes-Benz also displayed its rich SUV lineup at the Chengdu show and officially launched the M-Class Grand Edition.
The luxury legend also launched the latest masterpiece in its mid-sized luxury SUV GLK-Class, the GLK 300 Dynamic.
In the first half, the SUV sector - the fastest growing segment in China - reported a sales surge of 133 percent over last year to 587,000 units, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.
SUVs also comprised the largest portion of the 353,000 vehicles imported last year, accounting for 54.8 percent of the total.
"Mercedes-Benz has sold 17,800 SUVs in China to date this year, growing 85 percent over last year," said Hauber. "The huge market demand, especially in southwestern China, makes us confident to bring more products in the segment."
"Infusing high performance into the atmosphere of Chengdu motor show, we also brought two heavyweight AMG models here, which truly reflect Mercedes-Benz's 125-year heritage in motorsports," said Hauber.
Touted as the ultimate sports car, SLS AMG features a purist design that points to the future of sports car, while featuring the iconic gullwing doors.
Smaller-sized cars
The smart brand brought six variants to the Chengdu motor show.
"With an innovative design and eco-friendly character, smart truly brings to life the concept of urban mobility, which has been applauded by advocates who desire a car that offers their pursuit of individuality and creativity to people not only in big cities like Beijing and Shanghai, but also in Chengdu," said Hauber.
Bringing more options for people who want to join the Mercedes-Benz family, the company will further expand its portfolio with more smaller-sized cars as entry-level models.
"We have started presales of our A-Class that will be launched this year," said Hauber. "The A-Class represents very well how Mercedes-Benz changed in recent years to make itself a dynamic, younger and deep-hearted brand. It indicates our strategy of making every model of ours the premier one in its segment."
The long-wheel-base E-Class also captured a lot of attention at the show.
"The locally produced long-wheel-base E-Class is to reinforce the title as the 'World's Best Business Sedan', as the model witnessed continued success with more than 26,280 delivered so far this year," said Hauber.
Mercedes-Benz also brought other newly launched models - including the E-Class Cabriolet and C-Class Estate - to Chengdu.
"With such an extensive display amid a vibrant atmosphere, we truly brought to life its philosophy of 'The Best or Nothing' in southwest China, and further reinforced our unwavering commitment to China in the pursuit of 'Fascination, Responsibility and Perfection'," said Hauber.
An exhibition alongside the automotive masterpieces shows Mercedes-Benz's commitment to corporate social responsibility in the southwestern region.
Its efforts highlighted include help to Sichuan panda sanctuaries in earthquake-affected areas and the first music classroom at the Mercedes-Benz School in Shifang.

For the second time, the Nobel Peace Prize goes to a person identified as non-peaceful in Beijing's political who's who.
Liu Xiaobo, the 2010 awardee, is behind bars serving a 11-year term for "openly slandering and inciting others to overthrow our country's State power," according to the verdict at his trial.
The Nobel Committee said it was determined to honor "the foremost symbol" of the "struggle for human rights" in China.
Some may have expectations that such a prize will effect changes inside China in the direction they desire. But it can do little except expose, and in some ways highlight, the deep and wide ideological rift between this country and the West.
A man judged a "criminal who violated Chinese law" by a Chinese court of law, is hailed in the West as a "worthy winner" and "prominent human rights defender".
Peace, in Beijing's lexicon, stands for a good rapport among nations, at the heart of which lies mutual respect and non-interference in each other's domestic affairs. This year's Nobel Peace Prize, like the 1989 award to the Dalai Lama, angered the Chinese government because it is the West that is once again trying to interfere in domestic issues.
And, perhaps to some people's disbelief, this Nobel Peace Prize, as was true 21 years back, angered not just the government.
Most Chinese would prefer to handle their own affairs without outside interference. As ordinary citizens find more channels with which to be heard, and the government grows more responsive to public concerns, there is greater confidence that domestic affairs can be sorted out without any interference from the West.
Not that the average Chinese does not covet better guarantees and protection for their rights and interests. They want their government to be clean and efficient. They are angry at corruption and injustice. They complain and protest. They stand up against abuse.
Liu's award is a provocation to China. And every time the West waves a stick, relations deteriorate. That is against the Nobel Committee's proclaimed purpose.
Nor will all Chinese embrace such gestures with appreciation and gratitude. Whether or not it has to do with our collective memories of Western abuse, this nation will not allow its own home affairs to be dictated by the West. Few would like to see their government upbraided by a condescending Western party.
Like it or not, the Nobel Peace Prize broadens the suspicion that there is a Western plot to contain a rising China.

Re: Part of the plot to contain China .

I agree with China. IMO, the sole purpose of this Nobel Peace Prize was a futile attempt to promote internal dissent and destabilize China.

Liu Xiaobo never ended or prevented any conflicts. He never signed any peace agreements. He is not credited with saving any lives or bringing peace to any country or region. He is not associated with efforts to resolve any conflict peacefully. He is only claim to fame is that he is an outspoken critique of the Chinese government. Even though I agree with his viewpoint, Xiaobo is about as deserving of this award as Barack Obama who got the Nobel peace prize for not being George Bush.

The committee which hands out Nobel Peace Prizes has obviously been hijacked. Clearly this award has devolved into a propaganda tool to promote a political agenda.

basically eao....who the f*ck cares? If they want to award a chinese dissident the Nobel peace prize for his work, then they have every right to do that and the Chinese government can suck dick. Or do they suddenly have the right to tell others what they can and can't do. Like get pissed off at the Canadian Government for meetings with the Dalia Lama.

EAO - Once again you show how off the mark you are - You should research before you state so dumbly that he never saved any lives.

And what did the last winner do that was so great.

Also check 1935 or 36 to see who won the Nobel peace prize.

What a one sided opinion - How many died in Tianmen Square - How many are arrested for religious beliefs - Contain China - well I am all for it as they are the biggest threat the world has yet to see. Check on how they dictate their claims on the Yellow Sea.

Contain China. lol

They have more US Dollars, then the United States. They own the US debt and continue to be needed to give out more credit to the USA.

They don't care about world opinion and proved that when they also arrested Liu Xiaobo wife. Talk about giving the world the middle finger...

But I suppose the Peace Prize for Obama was justified, as was the one awarded Yassar Arafat.

Your defense of China belies your claim to be concerned with human rights.

The Communist regime in China has been responsible for more death than Adolph Hitler and Joseph Stalin COMBINED. At least 50 million people have been starved to death or murdered outright since 1949.

The Communist regime officially continues to execute more people than the rest of the world combined.

In addition, China engages in unofficial execution, killing thousands for religious belief.

Militarily, China occupies Tibet, and violently repressed Tibetan protests..........China has murdered hundreds of thousands of Tibetans.

China regularly threatens the democratic free state of Taiwan.

China is becoming increasingly aggressive over territorial claims in the South China Sea.

China seems to love African murder states on the planet.....Zimbabwe, and the Sudan depend on China for support and military supplies.

China is the sole backer of that little outpost of insanity, North Korea...........

China is pushing hard in border disputes with India, bringing them once again close to a state of war.

China is the worst state on the face of the planet. By far.

The award of the Peace Prize is ALWAYS political......and the current choice is the best made since one was awarded to Suu Kyi of Burma.

Clearly you are delusional when it comes to China - perhaps suffering from Stockholm Syndrome or just plain dumb. A little information on this man so tell me what you think after reading about him.

Nobel Winner Liu, Quiet Literary Critic, Terrifies Beijing: George Walden - Bloomberg

LIU Xiaobo

Human rights activism
On 27 April 1989, Dr. Liu Xiaobo returned home in Bejing and immediately took part in the popular movement to support the student protests. When bloodshed was likely near to happen for the students persistently occupying the Tiananmen (TAM) Square to challenge the government and army enforcing the martial law, he initiated a four-man 3-day hunger strike on 2 June, later referred as Tiananmen Four Gentelmen Hunger Strike, to earn the trust from the students, and published a joint statement, June 2 Hunger Strike Declaration. He called on both the government and the students to abandon the ideology of class struggle and to adopt a new kind of political culture for dialogue and compromise. Although it was too late to prevent the massacre from occurring beyond the TAM Square starting from the night of 3 June, he and his colleagues succeeded to negotiate with both of the student leaders and the army commander to let the several thousand students withdraw peacefully and completely from the Square, thus avoiding a possible bloodshed in much larger scale. On 6 June, Dr. Liu was arrested for his alleged role in the movement, and 3 months later expelled from his university. The governmental media issued numerous publications to condemn him as a “mad dog” and “black hand” to have incited and manipulated the student movement to overthrow the government and socialist. All of his publications were banned, including his fourth book in press, Going Naked Toward God. In Taiwan However, his first and third books were republished with some additions as Criticism of the Choice: Dialogues with Leading Thinker LI Zehou (1989), and Mysteries of Thought and Dreams of Mankind (2 volumes, 1990).

In January 1991, 19 months since his arrest, Dr. Liu Xiaobo was convicted on the offence of "counter-revolutionary propaganda and incitement" but he was exempt from criminal punishment for his “major meritorious action” to have avoid the possibly blooding confrontation on the TAM Square. After his release, he resumed his writing, mostly on human rights and political issues though he has not been allowed to publish in China mainland. In 1992, he published in Taiwan his first book after his imprisonment, The Monologues of a Doomsday’s Survivor, a controversial memoir with his confessions and political criticism on the popular movement in 1989.

Well, EXCUSE ME!

I was wrong.

Carleton University's Indicators for Foreign Policy does not list China as the worst human rights abuser on earth in 2007.

Instead, she gets fourth place, after North Korea, the Sudan, and Burma.........all BTW, supported by China. Personally, I think China should get the Miss Uncongeneality Award in the competition for her size, and her unerring support for all the top murdering bastards.

Country Ranking Table 2007

Apologists for China today are exactly the same breed as the apologists for Hitler in the 30s..........kiss arse to the fascists.

Oh, and Earth as One, I will laugh myself into a coma the next time you claim to be a disinterested, neutral defender of human rights. Whereas China comes in fourth, Israel comes in at number 113...................not a great showing, but well ahead of every single one of the Arab/Persian/Turk nations in the area.

Mutual respect would be to allow your currency to float on the market like the rest of us...nah. China only likes this sort of mutual respect when it aligns with their interests, though to be fair it's hardly a one-horse show.
