In Canada, what should you NOT say.

In other words, I just read a string of posts that say "I'm not Christian."

You really shouldn't say that in Texas. As far as we all know, either you are Christian or Jewish. Both of those are OK, but it is very risky to say that here. People wouldn't kill you, but suddenly, you'd have the worst BO on the planet. Anyone within a hundred miles would gradually evaporate and/or move away from you. It is not a topic which we discuss in polite society.

I think that's a crock. First of all... Texans aren't all one person. Go talk to some young Texans and see if you find some agnostics, some atheists, some buddhists and such. I bet you will.

Second of all... church attendance would say that not everyone in Texas is Christian or Jewish... some people are no religion at all.

So to say that someone is one or the other, shows that you're either lying, or using a different definition of 'Christian'.

Teddy Kennedy one appointed Pat Garret to a custom collecters' position in El Paso, Texas, much to the outspoken protests of the Texans.

It was not that Garret had killed three men, including William Bonney, (Billy the Kid). It was not that he ambushed the Kid in a dark bedroom.........after all, he was the Sheriff.

Pat Garret was a proclaimed atheist.

As Teddy said (with approval) "The Texans are pugnatious, but devout"

It's pretty ridiculous to compare Canada to Texas.

Canada is a big country and taboo subjects change from region to region. Texas is a large state but as a province it is a wee thing.

Good point Scott.

Also, generation to generation, what's considered a 'taboo' subject is fluid. I doubt that Texans below the age of 40 consider the same things off limits as Texans over 60, and the same goes for Albertans, Saskatchewaners, or Canadians in general.

I would say that his point is that some people are extremely intolerant.
I don't think so. He asks, "In Canada, what should you NOT say," and offers an example of something you shouldn't say where he lives if you want to have any credibility with friends and neighbours. I think his point is that he wants an answer to the question in the thread title: what should you not say in Canada if you want to keep your friends and neighbours talking to you?

There's nothing that I know of, beyond the obvious. You wouldn't be well regarded if you professed membership in the Church of Satan, for instance, and expressions of racism, bigotry, sexism, intolerance, and other such follies are generally not well received. Really though, there's nothing I've ever wanted to say that felt I couldn't say. Other peoples' experience may be different, I'm a member of the in group in this society, through no particular virtue of my own, just an accident of birth: I'm a white, English-speaking, university educated, healthy male, which at this particular time and place happens to put me on top of the heap. So don't take my word for it, I'm virtually certain I'm wrong, that there *are* things you can't say here. But I don't know what they are, my privileged position has not taught them to me, and I'd be interested to hear other views. Maybe we as a society can do something about them if we get them into the open. And if we don't get them into the open, there's no way to do anything about them.
