Some furry enthusiasts will need the hair of the dog when they read this.
A sub-sect of the movement - whose symbol some animal imitators found too similar to the Nazi swastika - have allegedly caused the cancellation of a Denver convention.
That sent the fur flying among the anthropomorphic set. The group - the Furry Raiders - then threatened to bring weapons to protect themselves, the Denver Post reports.
“People overreacted,” Rocky Mountain Fur Con Chairman Zachary Brooks told the Post. “As it got more and more heated, people started talking about beating up people wearing the symbol.”
So, reluctantly, the Aug. 11-13 convention was scrapped because of escalating security costs.
“They said, ‘We’ve got a right to protect ourselves and we are going to bring weapons,’” he added.
While he didn’t point his paw at Furry Raiders as the cause of the cancellation, Brooks claimed the movement “promotes violence.”
“I will no longer continue to subject my staff and our community to the lies, hate, violence and slander that was disseminated by a small, vocal minority,” Brooks wrote.
According to the Post, insiders tried to torpedo an alleged white supremacist movement among members in January and banned “offensive messages or symbols.”
Matters were made worse when one furry emerged from hibernation vowing to “punch these Nazis.”
Kendal Emery - a convicted sex offender - signed his letter with a blood red fingerprint. The FBI says it’s a symbol of the far right sovereign citizens movement.
