A debilitated cat’s cries for help Tuesday afternoon saved it from cruel and certain death.
A local Humane Society in Reading, Penn., is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of a sick and twisted pet owner who doused a tiny cat in gasoline before stuffing it inside a trash bag and leaving it to die slowly in a heap of trash bound for a landfill.
If not for a pair of attentive trash collectors, Miracle Maisy – as the Humane Society has named her – would have been finished.
During trash collection Tuesday, sanitation workers heard a faint meow coming from a half-crushed trash bag resting inside the truck, the Reading Eagle reported. They opened the bag and found Maisy, whose condition was so appalling it amounted to the worst animal abuse rescuers had seen.
“We are so thankful to these men and the trash company for bringing her in,” a Humane Society spokesperson said.
“Many people would turn a blind eye in this situation, but they were proactive in getting her the help she needs.”
Dr. Kimya Davani, a local veterinarian, told the Reading Eagle that Maisy’s internal body temperature had plummeted.
She also was underweight and suffering from skin sensitivity.
Humane Pennsylvania, which is treating Maisy in Reading, is asking for public donations to help with the expenses.
