The reason news sites are killing off comment sections is two-fold. One, it is usually where you get the bits of the news story our betters edited out in order to maintain the narrative.

The “Minnesota man” in the story is identified in the comments as Jorge Gonzalez, an illegal from Guadalajara.

It’s where the “suspect wearing a red shirt” is identified as a black guy named T’Q’ull Ferguson with a Facebook page full of pics of him holding a handgun and a bong.

The comment sections have become a leak in the system.

The other problem, especially for opinion sites like the Spectator, is the comments have become the place that makes the writers cry.

Sure, there’s lots of inane chatter, but it is also where some smart people post corrections and point out the many glaring logical errors.

[Opinion writers] have fragile psyches, so seeing their mistakes highlighted for everyone to see, right under their posts, is a source of constant distress.

Like the shooter at Ecole Polytechnique, Gamil Rodrigue Liass Gharbi. He changed his name to Marc Lepine. This was the impetus behind the liberal's gun control. Violence against women and such. The guy was muslim. That's why he hated women getting an education.

I have found on the newspaper sites I visit there are a lot of plain ignorant comments posted to most any article. No wonder they are cutting the comments.

With the speed of the news cycle, there's no time for patience, subtlety or nuance anymore...the headlines and articles are now just Buzz. Quite often, the viewer's commentary were more credible than the actual scribes who published the gratuitous drivel.

Of course there is more to that story than has been widely reported; Gharbi/Lapine had applied for admission to the engineering course but was denied in favour of Quebec's affirmative action of showing preference to admitting women into studies normally dominated by men. He was basically an already unbalanced victim of the quota system, Quebec may not have lit the fire but they left enough kindling and matches around that the result was almost predictable. But woe to the journalist that puts all that in print, but someone like Christie Blatchford, Margret Wente or the late George Jonas would be the types to take it on.

That's why I still prefer the print media, letters that get published are vetted and actual names are posted. Although the online stuff is handy the comments are irritating, there is more chaff than wheat.

The reason news comments sections are being closed off is because they are filled with Alt Right trolls.

They'll come back, but you'll have to sacrifice your anonymity for it.

Thanks BB.
