Obama Ready To Bypass Congress On Gun Control
US President Barack Obama is taking steps to pass unilateral gun control measures, calling the issue a major piece of "unfinished business" in his time at the White House.
He announced he would meet with US Attorney General Loretta Lynch on Monday, his first day back at work after the New Year's break, "to discuss our options" in tackling the problem.
Mr Obama will take executive action, which does not require congressional approval, on background checks for gun sales, according to US media.
In his weekly recorded address, he said: "My New Year's resolution is to move forward on our unfinished business ... our epidemic of gun violence."
Mr Obama, who is on holiday in Hawaii with his family, reiterated his frustration at the lack of action by Congress.
"The gun lobby is loud and well-organised in its defence of effortlessly available guns for anyone," he said.
"The rest of us are going to have to be just as passionate and well-organised in our defence of our kids."
He noted that "tens of thousands" of Americans had been "mowed down by gun violence" since lawmakers rejected a bill three years ago to expand background checks.
Mr Obama is tipped to announce the executive action before his State of the Union address on 12 January.
A member of a gun control group familiar with White House efforts told AP news agency Mr Obama's order would set a "reasonable threshold" for when sellers must seek background checks.
The National Rifle Association opposes such a move, arguing that criminals obtain guns through theft, the black market or family and friends.
Currently, federally licensed firearms dealers must seek background checks on potential firearm purchasers.
However, advocacy groups say some of the people who sell firearms at gun shows are not federally licensed, increasing the chance of sales to customers prohibited by law from buying firearms.
