The Progressive Conservative party was a party comfortable in its institutional skin. It extolled its roots in the Tory party of Macdonald, it felt at home in the clubs and boardrooms of Central Canada — it saw itself as part of Canadian history. It was at ease in the corridors of power and felt that it belonged there, because it had helped build them in its image.”

The Reform and Alliance parties were outsiders. They regarded Ottawa with suspicion, even hostility. Government was a place to be cleaned up, fixed; the grassroots, not the elites, should be in charge; no one, including youth, should have ‘special status’ within the party organization. Power was to be wrested from the Laurentian elites who had held it for too long.”

I obviously voted Reform / Alliance.

Oh for the Liberals.. they can click here.

Fiscally conservative, socially libertarian minarchist (among other things and depending upon circumstances).

I think Harper's type of governing style damaged the Conservative brand somewhat when compared to the more open style the Libs are trying to portray. But time will tell.

I also think the Conservatived are going to have to move more to the left as it seems the younger population and immigrants are more comfortable will more government involvement.

Now that the Libs are in, it's going to be difficult to get them out. They could easily stay in power for ten yrs plus. All they have to do is to not make any major screwups in the forth yr of their madates.

I think Ambrose was the wrong choice even if it was only an interm position.

Big challengers ahead for the Conservatived now... The Polls in the next yr will provide a good glimps of what the next three yrs will look like for the Conservatives.

It'll be interesting to see if the old Reform/PC rivalries will re-emerge during the leadership race. Harper pretty much built the modern Conservative Party and held it together well. If these two factions still exist within the party who can continue to hold them together?

This is the slightly less stupid type as compared to the social conservative.

The problem is that you're a libertarian which is almost as naive as being a social conservative.

Don't know much about Canadian politics but here is my take on conservatives. My dad was a tree trimmer. Trimmed palm trees and he was good at it. Many years ago he contracted with a famous conservative senator in Arizona to trim his trees that surrounded his home. Dad completed the job in a very short period of time . What did the senator do? He decided that dad was charging him too much for the time spent doing the job and told my father that no laborer was worth more than a dollar an hour. That,,,shaped my impression of what conservative politicians are all about.

So you think being fiscally responsible is still stupid but not the stupidest. So to be brilliant one must be fiscally irresponsible. Interesting.

I tend to be socially libertarian. That is not the same as being a libertarian. It means that I think people should be able to do what they want as long as it does not negatively affect other people. I know some people will insist upon screwing others, but that is what laws are for. Somewhat consequentialist libertarianism. If that is what you call being naive then I shall keep being naive, thanks.

And you forgot to call me stupid or naive or something for being a minarchist.

Funny thing is Anna is a libertarian I am not but I believe in the policy of socially progressive
and fiscally conservative. I am not really a Liberal, nor am I totally a New Democrat.
I am not a conservative. Fiscal conservatives I have respect for they are at least somewhat
willing to listen. Reform or Social conservatives I have no respect for as they have respect
only for their views, somewhat like the Greens. They have an agenda and a blind faith
method of getting there. The nice thing is Reform Party social conservationism was tried
and found wanting. The damage can be somewhat repaired. They are now gone and we
can get the mindset of Canada back to on the right track. By that I mean government is
supposed to serve Canadians not what government can do To Canadians. Just glad the
Harper madness is over. Every time I see the Conservative symbol I think of the Ford Brothers

Here is a decent, easy-to-understand bit of info for you, mental loss:
"Social liberty is the synthesis of individual independence and communal autonomy from overarching government or state control.

Social liberty is the rejection of the concentration of decision-making authority into distant, oligarchical, centralized bureaucracies - federal or monolithic - and the embrace of diffusion and localization of that decision-making authority.

Social liberty exists in a political, social, and economic environment which allows voluntary accession to associations, but also permits a person to choose to remain free of restraint by society, except in cases in which an individual's claim of freedom interferes with another individual's right to be free from unwarranted, aggressive coercion or harm.

An economic system of social liberty regards free-market capitalism and democratic, communalistic socialism as equally conducive means towards the ends of general liberation from tyranny."

When I think of politics I remember how much influence the Los Angeles Times and the Chandler family Dynasty had on who did or did not succeed in public life. You either played the game with them,,or you were crushed in the California political scene many years ago. That says all I need to know historically about American politics and politics in general. You know, eventually the LA times was bought out by the Chicago Tribune, and faded into the abyss of obsolete former companies. In other words, they went under like a turd in a punch bowl.

If I had to identify myself as conservative, I'd probably identify as liberal-conservative.
