A woman on a Southwest Airlines flight said crew members told her she couldn't make an emergency call to her husband after receiving an alarming text that he was about to commit suicide.
"The steward slapped the phone down and said you need to go on airplane mode now," Karen Momsen-Evers told WTMJ.
Momsen-Evers, who was taking a flight from New Orleans to her home in Milwaukee, received the chilling text from her husband shortly before takeoff.
The text read: "Karen, please forgive me for what I am about to do, I am going to kill myself."
Momsen-Evers said she attempted to make an emergency call, but was denied by two different flight attendants due to Federal Aviation Administration regulations.
The Wisconsin woman wasn't able to make a call until the plane landed nearly two hours later and by then it was too late. Her husband was found dead at home.
"The pain of knowing something could have been done, it breaks my heart," she said.
Southwest Airlines released a statement following the incident, saying that flight attendants are trained to notify the captain in all emergency situations, but acknowledged that did not take place in this instance.
"I go to sleep at night thinking what could I have done, what should I have done," said Momsen-Evers.
