A law that bans ‘mixed race’ couples?

Yes. In 2014. In Canada

via sda

Little known fact: The Mohawk language has 1,000 words for "identity", and none for "irony".

The Kahnawake Mohawk council has a law that bans all “mixed race” couples from living anywhere in its Montreal-area territory.

A Canadian woman falls in love and joins her life with that of a man of a different race. As a direct result of this union, she is harassed, receives notice of eviction, and is told she must leave her home.

What century are we talking about? This one, I’m afraid; and the culprit is not some errant racist landlord trying to throw one tenant out of a building. It’s the Kahnawake Mohawk council, which has a law that bans all “mixed race” couples from living anywhere in its Montreal-area territory.

Waneek Horn-Miller is half of one of those “mixed race” couples who has been told to get out. Horn-Miller may be a Mohawk, but because her common-law husband (and the father or her two children) is white, the aboriginal activist and former Olympian is no longer welcome or permitted to live on Kahnawake territory.

This is happening in 2014. Which, to put things in context, is 47 years after the United States Supreme Court ruled anti-miscegenation (or race-mixing) laws unconstitutional in that country.

wouldn't the alternative, for them be that if after many marriages or common law cohabitation breakups they could well end up with non mohawks owning the property?

Wouldn't that be a very sad irony? The reservation crowded with non natives who they legally can't do anything about?

That's why the concept is so silly in the 21st century. If a nation defines itself this way we, as a civilized society, should do what we can to stop it not do what we can to support it. Why was it unacceptable in South Africa years ago but acceptable here? It has been acceptable because people have refused to follow logic and mistakenly believed this wasn't or couldn't happen.

Race is a social construct. Silly at best. Perhaps everyone on the reserve should take a DNA test and all with "non-aboriginal" genes should leave. The area would be back to beavers in no time flat.

Wow we usually here the other usual suspects are to blame for all the racism.
This time its the shoe on the other foot and one member standing up to the
tyranny of an organized elected group that is not accountable to any other electoral
higher power. We sometimes see other social situations that get resolved quickly.
Fromt time to time out in the open there is a picket line dispute between a union and
its own employees.
In this case the governing body of the reserve is doing to one of its own what they
claim society is doing to them My question when is the next election on the reserve
and will the other governing body intervene you know those other guys called
The Federal Government

You really have to spend some time along the St. Lawrence, to fully understand why the rest of the Six Nations look at these clowns the way we do.

How are they towards Metis?
About the same.

And this is surprising?
Actually, yes, not that this is new news. Not all Councils have the same opinions, nor do all reservations have the same land rights.

You don't have to sweep it under the rug. You just have to justify it by claiming these folks are disadvantaged and then throwing the racist tag at anybody that questions you.
Why do you keep saying stupid things in your posts?

That's the heart of the problem.
