Church should not fear change, pope says

VATICAN CITY: Pope Francis has closed an assembly of Catholic bishops that revealed deep divisions on how to respond to homosexuality and divorce, saying Sunday the church should not be afraid of change and new challenges. Francis, who has said he wants a more merciful and less rigid church, made his comments in a sermon to 70,000 people in St. Peter’s Square for the ceremonial closing of a two-week assembly, known as a Synod.

The working session of the gathering ended Saturday night with a final document that reversed a historic acceptance of gays by the church made just a week earlier – a result some progressives see as a setback for Francis.

“God is not afraid of new things. That is why he is continuously surprising us, opening our hearts and guiding us in unexpected ways,” the pope said.

At the Mass, he beatified Pope Paul VI, who died in 1978. The beatification brings the pontiff best known for concluding the groundbreaking reforms of the Second Vatican Council and enshrining the church’s ban on contraception a step closer to sainthood.

After an initial draft of the Synod’s final document was released Monday, conservative bishops vowed to row back on the upbeat tone adopted regarding gays, cohabitation and remarriage, saying it would create confusion among the faithful and threatened to undermine the traditional family.

Francis dedicated most of his sermon to the Synod, which tackled controversial themes such as homosexuality, divorce, remarriage and same-sex couples ahead of a definitive gathering next October after more discussions at a local level around the world.

He said the church had “to respond courageously to whatever new challenges come our way.” He spoke about courage a day after telling the bishops at their last working session to beware both “hostile rigidity” by doctrinal conservatives as well as “destructive good will” by those seeking change at any cost.

Francis called the Synod, at which some 200 bishops had heated debates on issues of sexual morality, “a great experience” because participants were able to speak “in true freedom and humble creativity.”

Now, he said: “The church is called to waste no time in seeking to bind up open wounds and to rekindle hope in so many people who have lost hope.”

The pope, who urged the bishops to speak their minds frankly at the start of the meeting, told them Saturday night that he would have been “worried and saddened” if there had not been such honest discussion during the gathering.

Voting tallies released by the Vatican showed that three controversial articles, including the final version of one concerning gays, won an absolute majority but failed to get the two-thirds vote needed for a broad consensus.

But the pope decided to keep even the botched articles, which would have been deleted under normal Synod rules, in the final document, meaning the themes will be discussed locally ahead of next year’s assembly.

Experts pointed to the long-term results of Francis’ new style for such assemblies, which in the past did not take place in two stages and did not allow for wider debate at the local level among the faithful.

“By changing the Synod methodology and making sure the assembly’s candid, sometimes contentious discussion was heard around the world, the pope showed he was not afraid of real debate,” said John Thavis, author of the bestselling 2013 book “The Vatican Diaries.”

“Pope Francis clearly placed the church on a new path, toward an evangelizing style that is less focused on doctrine and more willing to invite people in, no matter what their status,” Thavis wrote in his blog.

Former Pope Benedict XVI attended Sunday’s Mass, making only his fourth public appearance at a major church event since his resignation in March 2013.

Mal:3:6:
For I am the LORD,
I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

They probably told the Flock the same thing when they changed over to the Latin Bible. Their mission is to try and sneak in the real meanings while saying it was via some other cause that going back to the original tests.

The Vatican should be more worried about getting input from the flock than finding new ways to keep them in line. The subjects they cover are sins, they are sins that are covered by grace, period. If you have no greater sins that are not covered by grace (unless repented) then they miss the first gathering and are part of the 2nd one. If God gathers all of mankind with those two gatherings then the Church loses the threat of eternal damnation, the Vatican would be better of clearing that up than having a secret meeting on what terms to use so those members will stay in the RCC and paying their weekly dies. The Vatican is not a place that looks to ease suffering, they are out to make money off the sins of the flock. Guess who God is going to be more stern with, the flock or the Shepherds. There are no equivalent verses for the flock and the Sheperd in these ones are the Governments as God never left the Church with any authority than to publish and distribute the Bible. Teaching wasn't even a right given so the CChurches are themselves an abomination to God. (in that they are corrupt). With the 1611KJV being an accurate translation of the Bible the Vatican can't even reference their own Bible as it would be compared to the original and found to be quite different in what the words say.The 2nd set could apply to the Church as they would seem to be the ones that were given more (info).

Isa:56:10:
His watchmen are blind:
they are all ignorant,
they are all dumb dogs,
they cannot bark;
sleeping,
lying down, loving to slumber.
Isa:56:11:
Yea,
they are greedy dogs which can never have enough,
and they are shepherds that cannot understand:
they all look to their own way,
every one for his gain,
from his quarter.
Isa:56:12:
Come ye,
say they,
I will fetch wine,
and we will fill ourselves with strong drink;
and to morrow shall be as this day,
and much more abundant.

Lu:12:42-49:
And the Lord said,
Who then is that faithful and wise steward,
whom his lord shall make ruler over his household,
to give them their portion of meat in due season?
Blessed is that servant,
whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
Of a truth I say unto you,
that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.
But and if that servant say in his heart,
My lord delayeth his coming;
and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens,
and to eat and drink,
and to be drunken;
The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him,
and at an hour when he is not aware,
and will cut him in sunder,
and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.
And that servant, which knew his lord's will,
and prepared not himself,
neither did according to his will,
shall be beaten with many stripes.
But he that knew not,
and did commit things worthy of stripes,
shall be beaten with few stripes.
For unto whomsoever much is given,
of him shall be much required:
and to whom men have committed much,
of him they will ask the more.
I am come to send fire on the earth;
and what will I,
if it be already kindled?

And yet it did just that.

and His Holiness Pope Francis is trying to do something bout that. Unfortunately, the naysayers will always be criticising no matter what he does.

Oh yes, and the bigots and Satan's legions will always be putting the RCC down.

I didn't mean to come off as one, sorry if I did.

I'm in support of his Holiness' initiatives.

It would go a long way to bringing the Church and its critics closer to some for of peace. If that is at all possible.

Actually gerryh has a point the Pope did try to change something and his approach
didn't work this time but time is on his side. The old stalwarts of the church through
ignorance and selfishness clung to the old way. It just means a new way has to be
found.
The actions of those who reversed the Popes plea's turns out is the reason I left the
church behind a long time ago Many might have been prepared to give the church
a chance in a fresh start, instead they will retreat into the past and gain nothing.

The last line was not pointed at you. It was pointed at the real bigot. The only one on this board that could truly test my faith. The only one that I consider to be one of Satan's own. I don't think I need to spell out his name.

I don't really follow news on the Catholic Church or the faith all too closely, but of what I have followed or read, I have to say I find Pope Francis to convey a very positive, and inclusive, image and message.I used to have the same impression of Pope John Paul II as well. A message and a leader that is warm and inviting can do some very positive things both inside and outside of the church, do a lot of good.

If Gh and people like him hadn't already changed my mind about the RCC, his Holiness would have got my attention in that direction.

If change is coming why not start with cleaning up the Priests before worrying about how to tell the flock they are going to hell for being gay or divorced while their much more serious crimes (child molestation for example)don't keep any of them from getting the thumps down from God.

More evidence of your ignorance. More evidence who your true lord and master is.

I don't care much if any of the RCC but this Pope Francis ,I like , he has balls.

He has a collection of balls most likely. It's a tradition in that old club of old ball fondlers.
