Neckbeard, mansplain, now in Oxford Dictionary online: Amazeballs
The Oxford Dictionary has validated a slew of popular contemporary slang phrases, including amazeballs, YOLO and side-boob, by including them in its online version.
The colloquiums were added in the August update of OxfordDictionaries.com, not to be mistaken for its sister publication the Oxford English Dictionary which has a more traditional and historical approach to language.
The online dictionary said the latest additions reflected the traction of text and web expressions in modern language.
"There are plenty of informal terms in this update which often feature in online conversations," the Oxford Dictionaries said on its blog.
Some of the new digital terminologies added to the dictionary include internet terms like "livetweet", which describes real-time Twitter coverage, "Deep Web", which refers to an area of the internet not easily accessible from common search engines, and "clickbait" - an eye catching web link.
Widely-used abbreviations, such as SMH (shake my head), ICYMI (in case you missed it), and WDYT (what do you think) were also added to the database.
Many terms included in the update were brought to prominence after their inclusion in pop music.
The term "cray" - short for crazy - was included in a popular 2011 song by Kanye West and Jay-Z, and YOLO (you only live once), was coined in a 2011 track by Canadian rapper Drake.
Drake sought to obtain royalties for the use of the acronym, believing his song The Motto brought on the modern proliferation of the phrase.
Shortened versions of words were popular amongst the additions. The terms "vax", short for vaccine, and "doncha", a shortened version of don't you, were included.
The August inclusions could leave even the most adept English speakers a little baffled, with the addition of conversational words like "mainsplain," "douchebaggery," and "hot mess".
