“There’s an entitlement that is starting to emerge that I think is unhealthy for people and unhealthy for our country.”

No, that line wasn’t spoken by a politician. It was uttered by none other than actor Ashton Kutcher.

Kutcher sat down with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres on Wednesday to chat about the incredibly viral speech about hard work and dedication that he delivered at the Teen Choice Awards in August. And in explaining his past comments, he delivered a new set that could spread just as fast

DeGeneres praised Kutcher’s bold statement to teens about perseverance and dreaming big, saying that it was “such an important speech” to deliver — and one that she wholeheartedly agrees with.
Kutcher, who was given a lifetime achievement award of sorts at the event, told DeGeneres that he wanted to use his acceptance speech to drive home some very important points to the young audience. He explained:
“It was funny, I was going on the show to receive this like lifetime achievement for Teen Choice Awards and I thought it was kind of like, I don’t know if I’ll ever get a Teen Choice Award again. It just felt like an opportunity to be honest.
I think that so much of what we see in the world today is this sort of propaganda machine around fame and around celebrity — and I actually think that there are some kids in the world that grow up today that think, ‘When I grow up I want to be famous’ instead of, ‘When I grow up I want to do something, I want to build something, I want to create something.”

Entitlement Mentality

So. . . in a civilised society in the 21st century, like Canada, exactly what is every person entitled to? And how should a civilised society go about delivering those entitlements?

I like the idea that we're entitled to the consequences of our actions (or lack thereof).

I am stunned that a hollywood nutcase would utter such words. Incredible. Just maybe the tide will turn and people will begin to realize that the government doesn't exist to spoon feed the populace.

Maybe Kutcher was stoned????

Entitlement starts with expectations, what is seen to be 'the norm'. But what doesn't get seen is what goes on behind it, because we hide that away. If we're talking about kids and their 'dream big but with no idea how to get there' , I see that all the time. We can't really blame them, we could nit pick on specific parents but that will do little good because it's really a societal problem. We hide away the unnattractive, we have nice shiny glass storefronts but don't display what goes into building them, how can we blame kids for not believing in what they're seeing?

K, so your contribution is going to be sarcasm and petty carping. Thanks.

Seriously? You, of all forum members, are harping on somebody making sarcastic quips as contributions to a thread?

That kid ain't no Justin Bieber..........

No, he's not. And that kind of ticks me off because I don't really like him that much, lol. But I've got to give him props for the speech, my daughter showed it to me in the summer.

I did. I started a thread to see if I could get a discussion going.

That didn't work either, as we can see.

Ok.

My take is this: More and more folks appear to have a stronger reliance on "government" to be all things to all people. This translates into every conceivable aspect of our daily lives.

The examples are too numerous to detail, however, an issue that is being bandied about in my area has to do with the infrastructure costs (road, water, sewer, utilities) associated with residential homes and is between the home developers and the city. The discord relates to the development fees paid by the developer (75%) and the city's contribution (25%).

No one has fought the notion that the developer is responsible for these elements, however, the city has taken the position that it's contribution is akin to corporate welfare, despite their ability to assess taxes on this infrastructure (has a lifespan of about 70 years).

The developers are adding that onto the cost of the home, that is ultimately paid by the purchaser... This in turn has created a sh*t storm relative to affordability of homes within the city limits, and in order to garner votes, the city is demanding that developers offer a % of homes in new developments that cater to those with low incomes.

So - here's an example that outlines the evolution of the entitlement issue that pits one group against another.

Uh huh. Right. You've never done that at all.
Of course I have. When I'm bored, or feel like trying a funny. Or when the thread has descended into people screaming past each other incoherently. Which is generally around a dozen posts in. But I also like to think I provide apparently little-known facts and a good bit of reasoning to some of the more interesting conversations. Perhaps I overestimate my value to the board.

Irrespective of the message, we first have to accept that he himself contrived it and not some agent thinking it would serve to burnish a lacklustre image.

I have a problem with the message emanating from someone who virtually exemplifies the very epitome of "entitlement" living. He makes his living off of "pretending' and fantasy to entertain the masses of a society worshipping actors and sports figures, a significant segment of the populace, refer to as "heroes" for heaven's sake.

His words spoken by anyone other than someone such as himself would have far more import. It is particularly oxymoronic he chose to deliver this missive to a Teen audience when more mature group would very probably have responded with a "who does he think he's kidding?"

The message however, is pertinent and one that should resonate with all of us.
