OTTAWA — Two-thirds of Canadians think the law should be changed so that people caught with small amounts of marijuana no longer face criminal penalties or fines, a new poll has found.

The nationwide survey for Postmedia News and Global TV, which examined the state of Canadian values, revealed that the public is distinctly offside with the Harper government on the issue.

Earlier this spring, Prime Minister Stephen Harper attended a summit of leaders from the Americas, where some called for a major review of the so-called “war on drugs,” and perhaps even the decriminalization of some drug use. Also this year, Liberals at a policy conference passed a resolution endorsing the legalization of marijuana.

Im in favour of decriminalizing it. It wont be happening anytime soon though. Certainly not while Harper is in charge, which is unfortunate. We can no doubt save some money by not imprisoning people for stupid things like this.

But prisons are such great capital projects.
Actually, as infrastructure, they are. Especially while many of our Federal and provincial facilities are falling into a state of disrepair and over crowding.

But prisons are such great capital projects.
I was on a job at Grande Cache when they went from minimum to medium security, the inmates used to come out and throw rocks at us when on yard time as they were also doing a water line to the prison and there was lots of projectiles available to them.

Very uncomfortable place to work, getting swabbed all the time.
They hired about 60 easterners to work at the place, they were training when I was there.

When they dug up the yard for the new water line they found all kinds of caches of tobbaco and weed.

Geezus, not "tobbaco"! That's just awful!
That was when they made smoking in public places illegal, the warden said the inmates were climbing the walls. They were also in lockdown for months while they dug up the yard for the new line.

And that is why they are in jail- Doing things like that. My Lord, they got off easy.

Most of the guys there would stick you before look at you.
I dont think they put dopers there.

I can only imagine what the max security institutions are like.

It make sense.... Why handcuff folks with criminal records for something less dangerous than booze (except for the taxes)

Gov't is damned if they do and damned if they don't. Tough choice seeing all that tax money they don't get and even tougher figuring out how much they would lose if it was legal. While they quietly obsess about it they throw out enough red herrings to feed a small country.
