and if you are part of the 80% of the people, we are guilty of letting the 20% bully us.

That explains why it is so difficult for us to see our own spelling errors after writing something.

My spelling pet peeves, the ones that sproing off the page, are "would of" instead of "would have"; although that is more serious than spelling, and "definately" instead of "definitely".

Yep, you see a lot of "spelling" at the grade 2 level- "then" instead of "than" and "recieve" instead of "receive" are a copy that are irksome. I had a teacher in grade 10 for a commerce course, and if you spelt a word wrong on the test, she marked the answer wrong. Her logic was (and who can argue with it?) "if you've misspelled the word you haven't written the word":smile:!

Just so you know, it should have been "Too bad" rather than "To bad."

I think 80% of the complaining come from 20% of the people.

imo, it is nice to see properly spelted wurds on forims, butt if eye have to spent tyme cheching or coreckting then it just aint worth it. this forum isnt a literary medium. as long as wii communikate hour thaughts that should be eeenuf withowt having to put up with spellyng naughtzis.

I've always felt that learning another latin based language would make be better at english, but I guess that almost implies that the germanic is as undersireable as many centuries of slang.

I agree that learning other languages helps with spelling. There are many words that had small changes as the language evolved. For example, German to Dutch to English. W, V or V, F ... it helps to know the root words.

Interesting theory I never thought about. I've been learning a little bit of Swedish, no reason other than I feel like it and would enjoy knowing another language.. I've been a bit lazy though, I need to get motivated

French and english are an interesting combination. For example, most words ending in 'able' exist in both languages, example comfortable.

Most words ending in 'ary' can be converted to french by replacing it with 'aire' example: extraordinary, extraordinaire.

There is actually a learn french program that uses to similarities to teach a vocabulary (vocabulaire) of about a few thousand words in just ten hours.
