There are lots of sincere folk out there who buy hybrid vehicles thinking that they are doing something positive to "save the planet" but are they? Here is a most interesting website that has a list of cars based on their "dust to dust" energy use. That is, how much energy (expressed in US dollars) a vehicle uses per mile over its entire useful life: how much energy to manufacture and ship to point of sale plus how much energy it uses over its useful life plus how much energy it takes to recycle. As you can see, hybrids are just below or over $3.00 per mile where many cars that aren't generally considered "green" are much lower. This is partly because hybrid cars contain lots of electronics and batteries which take a lot of energy to manufacture and recycle.
