A new health scare erupted over soft drinks last night amid evidence they may cause serious cell damage. Research from a British university suggests a common preservative found in drinks such as Fanta and Pepsi Max has the ability to switch off vital parts of DNA. Now, an expert in ageing at Sheffield University, who has been working on sodium benzoate since publishing a research paper in 1999, has decided to speak out about another danger. Professor Peter Piper, a professor of molecular biology and biotechnology, tested the impact of sodium benzoate on living yeast cells in his laboratory. What he found alarmed him: the benzoate was damaging an important area of DNA in the "power station" of cells known as the mitochondria.

Juan, a little DNA mutation certainly wouldn't stop me from consuming a Rye/Rum and coke, in fact, I would welcome it.

I'm with you. I think if I switched to "Lamb's 151 overproof" it would kill any bad stuff in the coke. You can almost run your car on the stuff.....The only danger I see is hitting your head as you fall down......Drink it in a soft room...

151 proof is pretty much moonshine, I think I would go blind drinking that stuff.

Seriously, benzoate of soda is found in many foods and has been used for years. It is a little late for me to panic at this point. Wait a few years and another study will find that benzoate of soda not only makes us healthy, but makes our kids smarter....

A typical rye doesn't taste all that great straight or with water in my opinion. Scotch is a whole different story though.

Heh heh I might know them. I've been on this Bushmills Black Bush single malt with water and a Guinness diet. My wife has seen the light and changed from Crown Royal to Black Bush as well. Tasty I'll say.
