Unfortunately, the comments regarding CanLaw in this string seem to be true, and the owner/customer relations person does not discriminate against women. He is rude and discriminates against men and women in an equally vile way.
I was searching for some Information on Pre-Paid Legal Care and came across a very vile posting on his website that appeared in my google-search results. It was very wrong, and very rude. I wrote what I thought a very professional and informed response to his vile comments in his website posting. Here is CanLaw's response:
"Well we now know you are gullible, stupid and have too much time on your hands
Run along loser. We have no interest in dealing with idiots"

This, above, is a business man talking to a potential customer. Yes. I would certainly have been a potential customer of CanLaw, and would have happily referred people to their services, but now I feel I should warn anyone I can to not deal with them, considering my experience, and others as outlined below.

Stay away from CanLaw!!! Steve

RE: Post from "hermanntrude" on September 19th, 2007 12:09 PM:

I can only speak for myself when I confirm that I am, indeed, real! I'm just an average person who was trying to order a legal kit online for a friend. Unfortunately for her, CanLaw just couldn't cut it. His business could be so much more successful if he would just use some Customer Service skills. The "rule of sevens" is one that I think a lot of other companies live by. I have never had dealings with anyone like him in my life. I actually feel kind of sorry for him that he leads such an unhappy life. Life is far too short to be so miserable all the time.I even contacted the BBB. They, in turn, contacted CanLaw on three separate occasions regarding my complaint. He chose not to respond. I believe this is his favourite way of dealing with the BBB. I think he also is against the BBB. I recommend dealing with CanLaw at your own risk!

If you want the truth about CanLaw, you could visit the forums on their site. You'll find that the administrators responses to people's queries are pretty consistent with what people have posted here.

You could also check out the sites of the Law Society of Upper Canada (Ontario) and various other Law Societies across Canada for their opinion of CanLaw. I know that the Law Societies in Ontario and British Columbia have issued public advisories regarding CanLaw. They advise that people looking for legitimate legal information and referrals, avoid dealing with CanLaw.

Various Law Societies across Canada have received complaints about CanLaw from both the legal profession and the general public. That, in and of itself, is pretty telling in my humble but honest opinion.

I too have had a dreadful experience with CanLaw and J Kirby Inwood. Clearly a very disturbed individual who treats the most innocuous question with anger and hostility. After reading the complaints of law societies in Ontario and BC this is clearly an individual who does not deserve to be in business. Once you realize that you are dealing with a nutbar (based on his replies I thought I was dealing with an eight year old) his antics are much easier to dismiss.

Eventually he will go out of business as word of his boorishness spreads. I read a lot of comments from women but don't worry- he seems to have no qualms about vulgarity towards men too.

Best to stay well away from this cowboy. I'll leave the last words to him in an e-mail reply that he sent me

" You know nothing of manners.... you probably pick your teeth and eat with your face in the dish like a dog...
Your ignorance is the problem. Learn to use a computer.... ask a 2 year old to teach you...
as to your friends... go ahead tell your mommy too...
Make a bigger fool of yourself."

I received this e-mail from CanLaw today:

No, how much will you pay CanLaw for your attempt to circumvent our help wanted ads or paying for our directory
You are just a free loading deadbeat parasite.

This came after the following exchange:

Greetings,

Benchmark Legal Research, which is located in Cincinnati Ohio, provides legal research and writing services to attorneys. We are looking for a sole or small firm practitioner to assist us on an independent contractor/part-time basis. We are particularly interested in finding a Canadian lawyer who is familiar with the Canadian law-making process. The assignment involves identifying and tracking proposed legislation, regulations, rules and policy for a Canadian client. Can you recommend three lawyers who would be appropriate choices?

CanLaw's response:

And what will you pay us for doing your job?

Since the sender was unidentified, and based on the language in this message, I thought the message came from someone who was interested in the job. My reply:

The pay will be based on anticipated search result volume. We will regularly search selected databases for newly proposed laws and regulations that would pertain to issues and subject matters identified by the client.

I received the reply at the top of this posting. In my opinion, this person and organization reflect poorly on all lawyers.
