on the fourth Friday of November each year, Buy Nothing Day [BND] is for people to reflect on rampant consumerism and its fallout.
We have been brainwashed, to a degree, to have a hard-on for shopping. It becomes an obsession, we get a certain "high" when we whip out our....wallets , and shove our hands into our...purses!
- do you recognise this feeling? No? Then you are under its spell a bit too much because it is real. Get a grip for a day, stop shopping Nov 25th, the fourth Friday of November each year
evidence is that we spend more when we are stressed, as long as the stress isn't over a shortage of money!!
With Xmas at the door, we are about to experience this shopping fever at its highest temperature.
Personally, "I refuse" ... all of it, I buy nothing from Dec 1st to the 25, no gifts period.
Scrooge? No, thats part of the myth, like the way they bastardised Santa into consumer's daddy figure. Telling our children these lies does them no favours, and brings ditrust into the family unit << ok, maybe thats over the top, but you get my passion about Xmas now: I refuse to take part.

I wasn't necessarily replying to your post though... It's just good advice if your not going to buy anything on one day that you stock up the day before.

Basics don't count, and that would include transportation to work and school, but why don't you have a bus pass? It would save you money most likely, and you wouldn't have to carry tickets or change.

lol whell what can a student afford anyways and y does it have to be a fryday then again if i make my friends pay the movie for me and what about my bus ticket does tht count?

Straight on,that's the only way to shop.I never buy the cheapest and lowest quality products because I hate having to replace stuff over and over. I have to say that some second hand stuff can give great service tho[my washer and dryer are good examples[ Reconditioned and bought from a repairman]

I love this forum. I read something, and sometimes, it makes me go, "WHAT?!" Take Friday, the 25th, off? That's Black Friday! In the US, it's the day after Thanksgiving - the biggest shopping day of the year. Almost the entire work force (except emergency workers) are off work. I'm all for that, James.
You seem to think that this is being forced on you or something though. You sound scared, actually. Buy Nothing Day is purely voluntary, James. Just a suggestion for a way to say no to crass and over-commercialised society that values shopping for plastic crap over all else.
