Hi all, don't take this as spam or anything, I just have a question about this online banking service.

I've been seeing this online banking from ING Direct all over TV and the web and have checked out their website and now they say they'll deposit1 $13 into your newly opened account.

I was just wondering if anyone deals with this company and if they could say their experiences with them. I was thinking of starting one but just wanted some feedback first because the aspect of not dealing directly with people seems kind of odd. I use bank of montreal right now and the fees are really getting on my nerves.

Thanks for your comments!

I have never heard anything bad about them Sy.

Is that where you're going to get the first 13 of the 20 you will owe me?

I have an account with them. Their customer service is excellent. Although I speak of the US version of ING, can't be all that different.

In-person banking is rapidly becoming a thing of the past, as online banking becomes more popular, even with traditional banks. Provided that there is some place (physical of virtual) where they can be reached, and from which they will respond.

From what I can understand, ING Bank of Canada is a member of the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation, and provides the same protection other Canadian Banks can give your deposit ( subject to the maximum coverage limitations).

I would suggest asking you present bank representative what reason they would give you to NOT transfer your account to ING Canada, and then check his/her statement against online research and through communication with an ING representative.

I would not be prepared to entrust my savings with any bank which is not prepared to explain the strengths of their service contrasted with those of their competitors, not just their latest promotion.

Oh believe me, i'm not basing my decision to open an account on their latest promotion...but it is a sweet deal none-the-less.

Time to head to BMO and talk to the crabby service lady about what they can do to keep me as a "valued customer".

I have both my mortage & home insurance through ING and not a single complaint. They were able to offer me the absolute lowest mortgage rate (I checked out a good dozen or more places). My bank of 20 years could not even come close. We're planning on moving everything over as soon as they can offer online debit (royal does this now, and the only reason I'm sticking with them for the time being). But their customer service has gone down the tubes, and when you call with a question, I'm redirected to a branch in Toronto (5 hours from where I live) that know nothing about my local branch. At least with ING, when I've had a question about my mortgage or whatever, I acutally talked to a REAL LIVE PERSON!!! Just imagine!

If I needed a new bank, I'd certainly look at ING. But I use HSBC, and they're good to me, anyway. I rarely have a question or problem, but when I do, I go into the local branch, and they're totally helpful.

Hey guys, first of all just about all of the big five will get you a better mortgage rate than ING. Certainly no higher. Secondly, if you simply want to invest your money in short term savings then you won't even keep up with inflation. ING is great at selling everyone on keeping their money in deposits with a negative real rate of return. Virtual banking is good for cheap banking but isn't very good for much else.

Explain the products and services ING would provide to help me convert consumer debt to tax deductible debt?

I have a consumer bank account (ISA) with ING Canada, and you still have to keep your account active with your current bank. Basically you sign up, then mail them a cheque for $20, which they use to set up the account (and deposit the $20). Then all you have to do is log onto the ING account and transfer money between your bank account and your ING account.

It's simple, but usually takes a few days for the money to clear, regardless of which way the money is travelling. The interest rates are far, far better than what the banks offer, but you probably want to be putting in a good chunk of change to make it seem worthwhile (I believe it's 3.5% they pay monthly)

I need to talk to someone at ING about estate planning strategies. Who there can go over the pros and cons of jointure, probate and alter ego trusts?

ING is the McDonalds of banking. You get the cheap cheeseburgers that satisfy short term hunger pains. Don't expect to turn your finances into a filet mignon.

I think ING direct is positining itself as a savings account bank. But yeah, it's a bugger when you need the money and will get in a few days. But it might work for other people.

Hmmm... I should encourage a friend who takes his bank cards with him at casinos to do open an account...:D
