I got a call 2 weeks ago from someone purporting to be from my cable provider. They actually left a message with a return phone number, some sort of 1- 899 type number and said I had a virus that could affect their whole system and if I didn't contact them my internet would be shut down.
I was actually surprised they would leave a number on a message machine but I suppose that has worked on people before and they called back.
I phoned my provider to inform them of what was going on and gave them the number. They asked me if it was an automated call and I really couldn't tell if it was or if it was live.
Microsoft nor anyone will call customers. Tell them these callers are going to scam them. Don't allow strangers access to their computers and don't give out any credit card information.
