I'm looking for a good free GIF editor. Just something simple to play with. I don't have FTP or any real working knowledge of Linux so I kinda need a point and click format. Even if there was one to buy I wouldn't mind if I had the heads up on something good. There are a figgin hundred out there. But the advice of someone who has used an app. would be an asset.
Any tips would be appreciated.

Do you want to edit animated gif's or just static gif's?

You could edit gif's with Microsoft Paint, it's doesn't have a whole lot of options though. Whenever I have needed to edit graphics, I used Macromedia Fireworks or Photoshop.

You could try out a program called "Gimp". It's similar to photoshop, yet it is free due to it being open source. The learning curve might be a little steep though.

Making animated gif files is going to vary program to program.

Google for animated gif <program name> howto or animated gif <program name> tutorial, etc.

Other programs that people may wish to consider in place of photoshop (due to its price)

GIMP : The best comparison for anyone, open source development, and is catching back up to photoshop again.

Paint.net

http://gimp.org
http://www.getpaint.net/index2.html

Both of these are free. Gimp is cross platform, works on ANY os (32 bit). Paint.net is limited to 32 bit windows architectures right now.
