Is there a simple program in the above link that is good? I'm always a little nervous running executable programs without knowing much about the code behind them. I have one already but want to recommend a free version to a friend for some basic stuff. I appreciate any advice.

I thought Smart 2 was shareware rather than free. Perhaps evaluation copies are mildly crippled but work indefinitely or I didn’t find a link for the free version.

I switched to Coffee Cup Free some months back. It is free and works for me just fine--or maybe it just seems great in comparison to the junk I had been using for years. My Township just switched to Core Free. The town Treasurer had some problems connecting to a server but the problems might have been unfamiliarity with the product.

Download.com seems to like Core and approves of Coffee Cup for its intuitive interface but notes that it has a few quirks like overwriting files without warnings. Download.com also reviews Smart FTP well as a shareware product.

http://secunia.com/ is a site I just discovered that lists software vulnerabilities. One vulnerability is listed for Smart, none for Core and Coffee Cup isn’t listed. I also noticed new vulnerabilities for Firefox of the sort that might cause me to use IE7 (much as I dislike it) until Firefox is patched.

I have been using smart ftp since before it became smart ftp 2. It has always been free for personal use. It is also the most robust and featurepacked ftp client available for the windows operating system. Period. Ive tested 95% of them being a programmer/administrator.

http://smartftp.com/purchase/

That page contains the details of their free status. Yes, it says "purchase". Thats because they have a licensed version as well, but the non licensed is in absolutely NO way stripped of functionality.
