Didn't you get a dvd player program with your computer or when you bought your dvd-rom/dvd-rw?

Mega Codec Pack will play anything under the sun. Comes with players and all the codecs in one package. There is two other lighter versions as well. No ads and no spyware.
Winamp is very popular too and will play most formats.
