Well, it's fast approaching. Mardi Gras.... beads, boobs, booze.

But, following that, Ash Wednesday, and for many people, the observance of the Lenten season.

I was pondering the observance we endured as kids... those horrific days of having to give up tv... lol... and my daughter's strict decision last year, at the age of 8, to give up candy (she followed through even long after her mom and dad forgot and handed her sweets). It's been ages since I myself have given something up. So this year, wanting to attend mass, pay attention, attempt to regain some of my roots, I decided it should be fairly big. Something I don't benefit from ("This year I'm giving up pizza, hopefully I'll lose some weight!"), something I care about, something I'm totally addicted to.

So, I'm giving up you guys! lol. Giving up the net. Yikes, the thought is scary.

Anyway... I digress...

How many here observe Lent? What do you sacrifice?

I freely admit that lately I have begun to wonder if we have a choice in what we give up. For the most part, I think that decision is made for us and I'm not happy about it.
Are you giving up pizza and the net or just the net?

Just the net... the pizza quote was to illuminate the types of things I've heard from people in the past, wanting to benefit from their sacrifice, if that makes sense. Which is fair enough i suppose... just not the way I wanted to go about it.

And I guess you may have a point about not always feeling free to choose. I keep waiting for an excuse to opt out of this. lol.

Excellent idea, I'm giving up pizza, not too fond of the stuff anyway.

I just finished working hard on dropping my weight from 220 lbs. to 190 over the past year and it's been holding steady for a couple of months. I figure that was worth about 7 years worth of "Lents" - I'm giving up nothing! (I have nothing left to give up!)

Good for you CB, I know a little about what it's like, I was a dumpy 200 lbs. when I retired 11 years ago, hence part of the reason for the daily walking routine, I'm about 175 now, but still that's plenty for 5'8". (But of course it's all muscle which weighs more than fat)

Never observed Lent in my life, although some of my friends did.

On Tuesday, we'll have pancakes, of course, either at a church or at home.

My folks gave up banal religious observances for lent when I was a pup. They defected to the other side so I only observed the ritual without participating. Growing up in a green/orange environment made for some interesting family get togethers though .

I am more or less a lapsed Roman Catholic as far church attendence is concerned, but I observe Lent by giving up any kind of booze from Ash Wednesday to Easter, no meat during Holy Week and nothing but water on Good Friday.
