Speaking and listening are essential conditions for building the civilisation of love, Pope Benedict said during ecumenical Vespers at the Basilica of St Paul's Outside the Walls on the last day of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
Speaking in the presence of representatives of other Christian communities the Pope reflected on the theme chosen for this year's Week of Prayer for Unity.
"The words 'He makes the deaf to hear and the dumb to speak' are the good news which announces the arrival of God's Kingdom, the healing of incommunicability and division - the Pope said "This message is found in all the teachings and activity of Jesus who travels to villages, towns and open countryside 'And wherever he went, to village or town or farm, they laid down the sick in the open spaces, begging him to let them touch even the fringe of his cloak. And all those who touched him were saved (Mk 6,56)."
Recalling the Gospel account of the healing of the man who was deaf and dumb, the Pope said "in the Christian perspective, listening is a priority Therefore listening to the Word of God is a priority for our ecumenical commitment. It is not we who build or organise the unity of the Church. The Church does not build up herself, she lives not of herself but of the creating word which comes from the mouth of God. Listening together to the Word of God; practicing lectio divina of the Bible, reading linked with prayer; letting ourselves be surprised by the unchanging and inexhaustible newness of God's Word; overcoming our deafness for words not in keeping with our prejudices and opinions; listen and study, in communion of believers of every era; all this is part of a the path to travel to reach unity in the faith, in response to listening to the Word."
"Those who wish to listen to the Word of God can and must then speak and share it with others - to those who have never heard it, or those who have forgotten it and hidden it under the thorns of the anxieties and illusions of the world".
He added: "We must ask ourselves: have we Christians become too silent? Do we perhaps lack the courage to speak out and bear witness like those who witnessed the healing of the deaf and dumb man? Our world needs this witness; it waits especially for the common witness of Christians. Hence, listening to God who speaks, implicates reciprocal listening, dialogue among Churches and Ecclesial Communities. Honest and sincere dialogue is the indispensable path for advancing towards unity In dialogue we listen and we communicate; we compare positions and with God's grace we reach an agreement in his Word accepting its demands which are valid for all."

So true. It's why discussion and free speech are first things to go by the wayside when tyranny takes hold.

Sanctus did you ever read the Gospel of Thomas or any of the other unincluded books, how about anything on the dead sea scrolls or Elaine Pagels work. What's your reading been like?

I'll make my font bigger than yours, that'll increase the wieght of my words.I assume you're passing on the musings of Benny XIV. I'm quessing he's not up on the Christian theocracy exploding in the western world or he's speaking about a particular sect of christians only, namely the first real ones the Roman (former empire) Catholics. He's not being very inclusive is he? Does he have gods approval? I mean he is proposing stealing souls from the new real christians?And I might add these are particularly zealous adherants of the word, fully armed and itching to wield the Sword O God.
Silent, christ the mans not listening or he's deaf himself. Much of the planet is aquainted with the modern delivery of gods good works via his miracles like the aircraft carrier and the holy F16 and the saintly cluster bomb all blessed at the midwestern holy factorys, the application of the Sword O God proceeds undetered, the souls are being dispatched
into his eternal care as we speak. This just smacks of a hostile takeover to me,demand is up and he just wants a piece of the holy action.
He speaks of the "illusions of the world". Suffering from a great illusion himself he can not be reliably trusted to know what he's talking about. All this time Sanctus and the church
has yet to produce a single flower or bee or a rock for that matter.The church has always been carried on the backs of the poor and the powerless, it's fed on ignorance and want and war for every minute of its existance.
"Agreement in his word Accepting it's demands which are valid for all". The last line seems a bit to universal, if you know what I mean.

Anyway if he's serious about bee keeping for GOD I wish him good luck, maybe he's the Pope who can fix the mess the last one left, new management might be just the thing the old game needs.

Yes, quite a few of them actually. The Dead Sea Scrolls, yes, since they correspond to the present Scriptures. A great deal of philosophy and psychology, which my initial degrees are in. Thomas a Kempis(a favourite), Aquinas(another favourite) Merton, C.S. Lewis, Nostradamus, Satre, and on and on. I like provocative reading material. I also have quite eclectric tastes, and will read pretty much anything from Stephen King to Bonhoffer.

Pope asks: have we Christians become too silent?

Obviously never bothered to visit here. What a noisy bunch: a couple howling hyenas, a few chattering monkeys, and a gabby bear. (It's not an insult; I love critters and often think people should try to be more like them).

I wonder though, since these types of topics are posted under the heading "Christian Discussions", why those who are not Christian feel it is their duty to read them and comment on them? In other words, if these types of discussions bothered me, I'd never read them myself.

Since theres nothing on the top of the forum I can tell who the author of thread is OR what forum its coming from. Im outta luck aint I? And since christianity is obliously allowed over non christianity then Im a bit aprehensive to start non christian threads on the same generation as the christian threads.

Uhmmm, don't know about you, but I can clearly see when I open a thread what category it is placed under. You just want to troll in the Christian forum, obviously.

Again, since you find the faith so offensive to your superior beliefs, why do you bother to involve yourself in Christian discussions? Do you think your...uhmmm..wisdom is needed? Do you think we give a hoot what exactly you have to say about God, our bible or our Church? Clearly you enter these discussions to antagonize us.Lots of other categories you can read, but you are always to be found in the Christian discussions...why is that?

LOL keep talking your showing your roots. I open my mouth when hypocracy rears its ugly head. There is NOTHING quiet about christianity, NOTHING kind about shoving your opinion down others throats ....and thats what you do. Your hurtful and mean spirited and its your way or hell. Why 30+ threads a day to say"Yall are wrong we're right"? I cant put threads or furums on ignore and I have a right to be ticked by the gorilla tactics.

```Christians too silent?```
In the USA, Christians donate thousands of volunteer hours serving the needy in churches, charitable institutions, pee-wee leagues, American Legion, and many other groupings. How many youths grew up to become solid citizens because they learned about good sportsmanship and character development in youth leagues? How many more similarly situated youths will become even more contributive during our life times? The numbers are endless!
It may appear that too Christians are silent in the face of evil-doers such as Bush and the holier-than-thou antichrists such as Jerry Falwell. But I suggest that there are a great many who will not stand for injustices of any kind. The volunteers I refer to above are shining examples of that.
