If we start examining the signs preceding the coming of Jesus, then the words spoken by Jesus himself, in which he referred to the days of Noah and Lot concerning the generation experiencing the coming of Jesus, are a good starting point. He stated that the conditions just before his coming would very much resemble the societies of Noah's and Lot's time, and that before his coming, people would be as unprepared as then; in other words, history would repeat itself in a way.

Maybe. But this argument has been restated frequently all of my life. If these are the end of days they seem to have lots of company.

Not a very convincing link.

In the days of Noah, the problem was that angels engaged in sex with human females thereby producing ''giants'' that lived to be 120 years of age {Gen 6:4}. God feared that these offspring would overtake all humanity and He decided to detroy all of them except for Noah and his family.

In Lot's time, Sodom was not a society marked by unnatural offspring but was one where the wealthy exploited the poor {Ezekiel 16:48 et seq}. God destroyed that society but left the rest of the world intact. Had human sexuality been the problem which caused God to punish that society, He would never have allowed Lot to engage in sex with his own 2 daughters!

Our unjust Republican society is marked by the wealthy enriching themselves at the hands and sweat of the poor. Therefore, it more resembles Lot's era but not Noah's era. This means that only our unjust society stands to be punished - but not the rest of the world as in Noah's time.

Sure. He also said he'd be back within the lifetimes of the people listening to him. The Bible is not to be taken literally Onebody, it's the words of men with a political agenda, not god.

The Great Apostasy is interesting stuff, although a lot of it sounds like warnings of corrupt religious leaders to come after Apostles such as Peter...or was it Paul?

I like prophecy. For instance, according to their calculations, the Pre-tribs believe Ariel Sharon is going to be last Israeli Prime Minister. Kind of interesting in light of what's going on over there right now.

Maybe it was democratically elected Prime Minister? Either way, Olmert seems to be setting the stage for fullfilling bible prophecy.

The people that put the text together were not dumb by any sense of the word. They knew exactly what goals they hand in mind. Just one of them is longevity of faith. By tying in a second coming prophecy with a dooms day prophecy they have achieved that goal.

You nailed it when you said, “…history would repeat itself….”

Though the names may change everything repeats. What is new to us,is an old hat to the learned. As far back as can be verbally noted war and battle has dominated mankind. The bible starts with the creation and falls into the misbehavior of the very thing that was created. The lord smites, I love that word, The cycle has begun.

Knowing this trend would continue, as it has forever. I mean the new and improved 6000 year biblical forever or the belief of a longer history forever. Also taking into account human behavior. This was a way to keep the prophecy fresh in everyone’s mind. There is also a tie-in to “the end of days”. The end of days comes once a week, on the weekend. For that matter it comes everyday at sundown. This will always keep the word on the tip of the tongues of the believers. Therefore it is spoken of regularly. New converts are made, as well as enemies of those who have heard it before over and over.

A very bad example: My proverbium (L.) on the phone company.

They promise a lot and deliver on little. A different companies prophet appeals to this need, they are always available and always speaking of the competitions short comings. People use the very tool that was given to them, in this case the phone, to make a change from a service provider. It does not worry the original phone company because they are only in it for the perpetuation of the need for the phone. There are enough people out there to sustain their company. They realized that it is not about the big sell at the time or even their own sales. It is about the longevity of the need.

One must remember there is no proof that the Bible is anything more than the greatest novel ever written. I do not take stock of words written over 2000 years ago.
