Could it happen in Canada?

On Nov. 28, America's busiest shopping day, a Wal-Mart worker was trampled to death in Long Island, N.Y., after an out-of-control throng of shoppers broke down doors in their rush to enter. Police are blaming inadequate security to contain the more than 2,000 people who had lined up for bargains hours before.

In a similar instance at another Wal-Mart five years ago almost to the day, a Florida shopper was trampled to death by a mob that had lined up for discounts.

CBC.ca's comment board was filled with expressions of shock, many blaming gluttony and consumer greed and Wal-Mart itself for encouraging this kind of frenzy.

Are these instances of consumer mania a strictly American phenomenon? Could it happen in Canada?

It could definitely happen in Canada and worse things already have. About 30 years ago in Montreal a small boy drowned while dozens of people sat and watched- they didn't want to take a chance as they felt the water was polluted.
