Republicans spent big at Saks, Neiman Marcus to outfit hockey mom

CHARLOTTE, N.C.–Dressing up the self-styled hockey mom cost the Republican National Committee more than $150,000.
Small potatoes in a big election, Republican officials said, after trips to Saks Fifth Avenue in New York and St. Louis and Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis for Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin were uncovered by the U.S. political website politico.com.
That may be,
Not only does the shopping spree not square with a candidate seeking the Wal-Mart vote, Palin flubbed a question from a third-grader, posed by a Colorado television reporter, on the role of the vice-president.
There were published reports that Palin charged Alaska taxpayers more than $21,000 for airfare and hotel accommodation so her children could travel with her to events, including some to which they were not invited. The reports said she amended expense statements to show the children were on official business.
A major poll by NBC and The Wall Street Journal released Tuesday night showed that, of the four persons on presidential tickets, Palin was viewed most negatively. That negative rating has worsened by 20 percentage points since she was chosen by Republican presidential candidate John McCain.
More than half the respondents said she wasn't qualified to be president. She was also judged to be a bigger drag on McCain's campaign than President George W. Bush.
The day before this particularly dark 24 hours, Palin apologized in an interview on CNN after she implied there were anti-American parts of the country, because she referred in one stop about how good it was to be in a "pro-America" state.
Almost half the wardrobe and accessory spending came in one fell swoop at Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis during the Republican convention in neighbouring St. Paul.
Politico.com reported the party spent $92 for a romper and matching hat for Palin's baby son, Trig, which he wore at the convention.
"With all of the important issues facing the country right now, it's remarkable that we're spending time talking about pantsuits and blouses," said spokesperson Tracey Schmitt. "It was always the intent that the clothing go to a charitable purpose after the campaign."
The Alaska governor, who once joked she would have to find out what a vice-president did before she could say whether she would be interested in the job, took that exact question in a Colorado interview.
The question came from Brandon Garcia, a third-grader in Westminster, Colo.
"That's a great question, Brandon, and a vice-president has a really great job, because not only are they there to support the president's agenda, they're like the team member, the teammate to that president," Palin said. "But also, they're in charge of the United States Senate, so if they want to, they can really get in there with the senators and make a lot of good policy changes that will make life better for Brandon and his family and his classroom."
The U.S. vice-president casts the vote to break a tie in the Senate, but is a member of the executive branch of government, not the legislative branch.
Republican officials said the criticism was unfair because Palin was responding to an 8-year-old.
Palin has been sprung from her anti-media bubble in recent days, with mixed results. She told the Christian Broadcasting Network she would back a constitutional amendment outlawing gay marriage, putting her at odds with McCain.
Then, in an impromptu chat with reporters travelling with her, she appeared to criticize the so-called automated "robocalls" the McCain campaign is using against Obama in battleground states.

I don't know many hockey Moms who spend that kind of dough on clothes, if she wanted to be the average "Joe" why didn't they put walmart clothes on her instead of designer rags, this and Cindy spending $300,000 on one outfit....guess we know who the elites are now.
