The U.S. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presents its 80th annual Oscars gala on Sunday.

The traditionally star-studded Academy Awards telecast will take place as usual, thanks to the recent end of the screenwriters strike, which had cast a chill over Hollywood.

A crop of acclaimed, but darkly themed films dominates the best picture nominees, led by front-runners No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood. Rounding out the category are Michael Clayton, Atonement and — the sole comic contender — Juno.

Prominent Canadian nominees include Juno star Ellen Page, filmmaker Sarah Polley (vying for an adapted screenplay Oscar for Away from Her) and two animated shorts: I Met the Walrus and Madame Tutli-Putli.
