New York Islanders forward Chris Simon was slapped with a 30-game suspension from the NHL on Wednesday for stomping on the back of the leg of the Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jarkko Ruutu Saturday night.
It’s the longest suspension handed down in NHL history.
It’s the eighth time in 15 NHL seasons that Simon has been punished by the league. The 35-year-old forward, who sat out the first five games of this year to complete a 25-game suspension for his cross-check to the face of the Rangers' Ryan Hollweg last March, will forfeit $292,683 US in salary and will be eligible to return Feb. 21 against Tampa Bay.
Many expected the league, which has already had its name tarnished this season by ugly incidents involving Steve Downie and Jesse Boulerice of the Philadelphia Flyers, to make an example of this latest on-ice incident.
Do you feel the NHL came down hard enough on Simon? Will the suspension deter this kind of on-ice thuggery from happening again? Post your comment and have your say.
