Organizers of a holiday toy drive in Ottawa say they're not sure they'll be able to hand out all the toys they receive in time for Christmas because health and safety recalls for some toys have slowed down the sorting process.
Toy Mountain, run by the Salvation Army, hopes to collect, sort and distribute 80,000 new toys this year to 11,000 children in the region.
But that process is taking up 25 per cent more volunteer hours this year because of recalls for products such as Polly Pockets, some Dora the Explorer products, Magnetix toys and some Sesame Street toys, said Salvation Army spokesman Michael Maidment.
"We've had to go out into the community, seek out more of those volunteers and use up more of those volunteer hours specifically for checking for recalls," he said.
