There are about 2,500 Canadian soldiers stationed in Afghanistan, mostly in Kandahar. British, Canadian and Dutch troops make up the bulk of the coalition troops in the province.
With the latest casualties, 66 Canadian soldiers and one diplomat have been killed in Afghanistan since the mission started in 2002.
The insurgents have now claimed a record heavy toll of Canadian lives in the past three months, with five explosions killing 19 soldiers.
As always the debate to stay or get out of Afghanistan gets louder with each new Canadian death. Many of our soldiers in Afghanistan say that every soldier's death makes them more determined to stay so that their comrade's sacrifices will not be in vain.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper said last month that Canada's military mission would end under its current commitment to NATO in February 2009 unless extended by Parliament.
