It's good to see Stats Canada finally reporting something that might be close to reality. As a lad who gets part of his income from an inflation protected pension, I have been at war with the Canadian organization for years. The core inflation rate, that conveniently weeds out all the volatiles - the budget breakers like energy and food - is Stats Canada's baby. It's a neat way to put the screws to retirees. And it is the rate used by most pension plans that have Cost of Living protection. It's all a sham. So it's nice to see the core rate spill past 2% so early in the year. Even Stats Can number crunchers are starting to lose their grip in this potent reality game.

I'll bump this one to the top of the stadium again. The inflation rate is critical to our understanding of the economy. As long as it's subdued we tend to think everything is peachy. Is it? Why can't the core rate, as used by Stats Canada, be replaced by something more respectable? Granted, Canada isn't alone in this interpretation but how did the world get used to such sloppy accounting?
