he federal Conservatives have reintroduced legislation that would allow police and intelligence officials to intercept online communications and get personal information from internet service providers (ISPs) about their subscribers without first obtaining a warrant.

"New and evolving technologies provide new ways of committing crimes, making them harder to investigate," said Justice Minister Rob Nicholson, while announcing the legislation in Ottawa. "Criminals continue to find new ways to evade the law. Our Criminal Code and other federal legislation must be updated."

This article mentions a privacy clause, do any of you know what it entails?

The privacy clause I wouldn't know about but I think it is time we stood up against this.
The reason is it fosters another round of McCarthyism. For those who don't know or
don't remember, Senator McCarthy accused everyone of being a Communist or a
communist sympathizer. He ruined the careers of hundreds of people. The only one
he likely never attacked was Mother Teresa. Incidentally Richard Nixon was one of his
right hand men on the Senate Committee. That all went down in the fifties when the
government and police were concerned about everyone from Beatniks smoking pot
to communists hiding under our beds. We appear to be going back there in the war
on crime and the fear mentality. Must be some big increases coming in law enforcement
budgets.

Rather scary. But then the long gun registry stazi have the power to enter your home without a warrant or prior consent just to see if your registered rifles are stored according to the latest rules. One more nail in the coffin of freedom. The oddest thing is that the police do not have the same power to enter a home or even tap the phone where they know criminal activity is carried out.
Are they worried about other parties forming a coalition against them via the internet?

Conservatives after ALL your internet activity - no warrants!

Heard of “21st Century Act” and “Investigating and Preventing Criminal Electronic Communications Act”? The Conservatives are tabling them yet again! The Federal Conservatives have reintroduced legislation that would allow police and intelligence officials to intercept online communications and get personal information from internet service providers (ISPs) about their subscribers without first obtaining a warrant. This is the fourth time they have tried to get this passed. This bill gives Big Brother total control to see what you are doing online whenever they want for whatever reason they want. No need to bring those pesky judges into the picture. Judges just stand in the way of infringing on all our rights and freedoms as they want to.

If passed, your Net activities are an open book to any bureaucrat and "policing" authority who just feels like checking you out for no good reason at all. Canada's version of "Homeland Security", but worse - Harper claims its to fight terrorism. Reality is, he's following the US media & entertainment industries demands that Canada comes to heel & follows their rules on file sharing. He's so clueless he doesn't even know what GNU & Open Source & Freeware are - all of which will be tracked & create an excuse for invading your account & your computer. Good luck trying to access The Participatory Culture Foundation/Miro or downloading a "Ted Talks" video or reading a book on Project Gutenberg or a Wiki if they get this passed!

If, after reading the absolute abrogation of our rights as Canadians under our Constitution these Bills will create, you're not too happy - make your feelings very strongly known to your MP, Harper & anyone else you think should know how you feel. Remember what they did to 15 year old Ashley Smith for throwing crabapples!
