No Accountability For MP Spending

The parties in the House of Commons turned down a request from the Auditor General to allow her to audit their personal spending. That means that $500 million of taxpayers' money can be spent any way the Members of Parliament choose. This seems to be a serious breach of the right of voters to know just haw their elected representatives are spending tax dollars. Interestingly, the only party that voted in favour of allowing the Auditor General to do her job was the Bloc Quebecois. Time to send off an email to my MP.

All expenditures by members of the Honourable the Senate, and the House of Commons, are audited by an independent firm. It would be double-handling for Ms. Sheila Fraser, the Auditor General of Canada and her department to review the same records again. There is no reason for the Houses of the Parliament of Canada to pay for the same thing to be done twice.

Where are the public records of this?

There is a simple way to put an end to this nonsense and at the same time save money. Don't give politicians any cash or equivalent. Set up accounts at all appropriate businesses, where the M.P. by showing I.D. can make purchases, which will be fully itemized and easily scrutinized when the bills are submitted for payment. The companies who participate in this should not be considered unless they are prepared to give a discount for the huge amount of potential business. That should curtail expenses at strip clubs, cocktail lounges, escort agencies, massage parlours etc.

That is one of the dumbest ideas I have ever heard.

Based on the general level of logic and common sense shown in most of your posts, THAT doesn't surprise me.....................:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Tell me JLM....how are you going to prevent this from being abused?

Are you going to audit the buisnesses?

You're not. It's much like the old adage "locks only keep out honest people". It just might keep basically honest people from doing foolish and frivolous things. The only way to stop the real crooks is to put them in jail.

You didn't answer the question.

How do you police this system without an audit.

I'm not sure you can. Aren't all gov't. systems subject to an audit? I think at best this system would only reduce the amount of auditing required. It would reduce the amount of time spent scrutinizing "receipts" and questioning the legitimacy of claims in that the vendor is registered and the purchases are itemized.

Anyone who has the power to raise their own salary without any responsible oversight - like Members of Parliament - can make laws (and probably have already) to make any accountability impossible.

So, what else is new?

I thought there was one MP who had in fact itemized all her spending and put it on her website for all to see. I can't remember her name, but it was on CBC the other day. To the best of my knowledge though, she's the only one doing it, and that's of her own free will and from her own initiative. Looks like her community chose well.

Then like I said your idea is the dumbest I have ever heard.

Either way there has to be some system of an audit and I trust Sheila Fraser to do the right thing.

As long as the party hacks don' come out in force to vote with their blinders on:

Oh lookie here, the name of this party sounds real cool and that snazzy add they had on TV the other day, and the leader had a sexy voice. I think I'll vote for this guy here.
