Why do you support an idea?

In another thread, one poster argued that some people support an idea because it's supported by the government of a country they like.

I have a hard time believing this, and believe rather that most people will support an idea on its own merits. I'd decided to create this poll to try to settle that issue.

I'm not surprised in the least. I just wanted proof to present to him next time he comes up with such an argument.
