Sure there were a few, JLM. They imported Chinese to do the manual labour. However, percentage wise it was very small, nothing compared to the diversity we have today. The country was much more homogeneous in those days.

Canada is not USA. In USA they have had a substantial black population for much longer than in Canada, they imported slaves.

No doubt about that, Richmond B.C. looks like down town Shang Hai and Surrey B.C. looks like downtown Calcutta.

Thanks TenPenny, but that doesn’t help much, it doesn’t tell us the breakdown into whites and non whites. The ‘other ethnicities’ given in the link constituting 13% of the population probably were mostly white.

I live in Regina in an area that, 50-100yrs ago was called German Town. It can
be found east of China Town. Between these areas could be found the Ukrainian
Co-op, across the street from the Serbian-Croatian Church. Neither one of those
just grew out'a the ground recently. White folks where quite capable of prejudicing
amongst themselves quite well....based on religion, ethnic & countries of origin,
etc...

Yes. Black folks where thin on the ground at the turn of the previous century, but
hate and racism where not: History of 'Shiloh People' preserved in province's oldest black cemetery

I quite agree, Ron. In those days the prejudice was not against blacks (well, there was, but there were no blacks against whom the prejudice may be practiced), but against lesser of white races, such as the Irish, Ukrainians, East Europeans, Slavs etc. And of course, let us not forget anti-Semitism.

Prejudice, bigotry comes naturally to humankind; one has to make a conscious effort to get rid of it.

They're just domanant over you. It's science. Now that you've been put in your place bottom boy, bark like a little doggie or no leash time.

Add that to your animal kingdom science.
I'm done here.

BUT!!!!!

May i ask you something.
Do you see millions of heteral sexuals walking the streets for gay pride?
Do you see millions of non drug users marching for legalization of drugs.
Have you ever seen what is at those weed marches?

One year there were 5 naked males on leashes that were attatched to their scrotums being led down Younge St. in front of all.

Obviousley they were told that this was extreme and could they lay off this aspect of their decadence.

It's criminal.

There is zero garbage buildup where I live in Toronto as the city is allowing people to dump it in parks etc. I pity the people living besides one of these temp transfer stations.

Not as bad as all that. Most places have private garbage collection so it's not like the picture everywhere.

There are transfer stations, a lot of them in parks that you can take your house hold garbage to that then gets trucked out to the landfills. There was an idea floated about that any place there are picketing is where you can drop off your house hold garbage. I liked that one. heh heh

The clean streets in Toronto don't make the newspapers out here it seems.
Maybe that woman is walking her dog in a park? Maybe the park is full and
that's why she's on the road? Maybe she's on Strike and walking the picket
line? I don't know....

Someone probably took the picture because it is so incongruous - a full length dress to walk a dog by a bunch of garbage. It is a strange picture.

The only place I see it building up is the temp transfer stations.

I ventured into Chinatown on the weekend, expecting garbage to be everywhere but to my surprise it was actually quite clean, by Chinatown standards anyways.

Your newspaper photographers are probably bitter, ex-torontonians trying to make us look bad

Our local Reporters (both of them, I think) don't get out much, but with
the newspaper being part of a chain, whomever took that picture most
likely didn't have to travel too far from home, and would work for whatever
the local Canada.com paper is out there.

If one of our Reporters took a picture for the newspaper, it would look
more like these:

There are a lot of people out of work. Another couple of months and they'll work for almost nothing ... on a contract basis....

Well, I would rather seem him hold his ground instead of giving into the greedy bastards on strike.

Of course to try that could setup a showdown between all union workers and the City.

The sick days issue is the clincher I think. You get so many a year and if you don't get sick and use them then you can bank them, taking money for them as severance when you retire. Other than that, there is no severance package or anything.

Everyone else including council members get 2.4% - 3% raises, why not these guys?
