What are we doing in Afghanistan?

The media tells us that we have a noble purpose in Afghanistan: to install democracy there. Now, do the people of Afghanistan want us there? When I hear that some person there decided to kill himself for the sole person of killing Canadian soldiers, it looks to me like a hint and a very strong one that we are not very welcome there.

We installed Karzai there 7 years ago; why does he need foreign soldiers to keep him in power? When Taliban took power, it didn't need any foreign soldiers to keep them in power. When Saddam Hussein took power in Iraq, he didn't need foreign soldiers to keep him in power.

We are being told by yellow media that our Afghan army in its "embryonic state", that it takes long time to train a soldier. Well, in 7 years, you can train a brain surgeon, not just a soldier. The truth is that people of Afghanistan do not support Karzai and his corrupt Government, and do not wish to serve in his army. How come out of 30 million population, he cannot find a couple of thousands to replace Canadians?

As far as quality of soldiers are concerned, they seem to be born soldiers. They managed to defeat mighty Soviet Army. Remember my words: the final outcome for Americans and foreign occupiers of Afghanistan will be exactly the same as with Soviets: sooner or later, the people of Afghanistan will kick them out of the country.

I think we should try to negotiate with the taliban...At least keep in communication...After all, how do we end a war if there is no communication..WW 2 would have lasted forever without communications.

I would really like to see Osama Bin Laden at the negotiation table because I don't believe he is still alive!...I believe the Taliban are just misguided villagers,,People with extremist dilusions against a foreign invader!!

Let's see Osama!

The Taliban who "harboured" al-quaeda are gone. Mission accomplished. Time to go home.

I heard our former foreign affairs minister talk on TV about our mission there, and really was out of his depth. We can not make Afhgan. a better place at present. We have to leave to do this.

Asia is not the west, even Japan and Korea have lame democracies that permit strong discrimination against outsiders. So the Islamic republic in Afghanistan has no intentions of being democratic. Especially in its poverty stricken state.

Time to go home and build schools and medical clinics for them. Even the Taliban leadership sent their kids to school and let their wives wear makeup. We are offending their prickly pride being in central Asia at the moment. Declare victory, go home. Easy peasy.

seriously, we are in Afghanistan in fulfilment of our NATO responsibilities........you know, the mutual defense treaties we have with the USA and Europe. The USA was attacked by a terror group based in Afghanistan,and our primary aim there is to prevent the nation falling to the Taliban, allowing the re-emergence of gov't supported terror training and staging areas........

Better killing Taliban in Afghanistan than having the CN Tower blow up.

Improving the lives of the Afghan people is a very desireable secondary aim......but it is only secondary.

Better to ask the Liberals, who initially put us there AND volunteered for the toughest combat role in Kandahar........after cutting the miltary so dee[ply that we did not have the equipment necessary, i.e. helicopters.

A confession, whether it is believed or not, certainly constitutes "evidence".

Certainly no evidence anyone else did it. And if he didn't do that (which he did), his organization is responsible for attacks on the USS Cole, and on three African embassies, causing hundreds of deaths.

And right, this is a American Imperialist war.....so they can build a pipeline......to supply Kadjikistani (sp)oil to India.....

Yep, I'm serious.....they contracted out for helicopters, and the company that supplies them (unarmed, medium lift choppers) uses Russian machines and pilots. I guess we only rent them from the Russkies indirectly.....but that's who they belong to. As for the pilots, they're Civies now, but some of then served in Afghanistan.

One of the reason Canadian soldiers died was we had to run supplies down the road.........to be ambushed or blown up by mines.

Why are we in Afghanistan?

I have no idea why, I can take a guess though.

We are wasting our time nation building in an area no body has ever been successful doing in all of history and arrogant us think we can.

Ask yourself a simple question, what if we had done nothing. The argument that this action prevented more terrorist acts on the U.S. is a joke and specious at best. It's like saying a rock keeps bears away because you don't see any bears.

They should have been contained with no invasion and if the people there wanted to end the Taliban regime they should do it on their own, why do neo-cons (socialists) want to save themselves on the backs of young men and women?

Fear and never minding your own business is the root cause of this conflict perpetrated by cowardly conservatives.:roll:

protecting the drug trade that the taliban all but stamped out and also protecting a gas/oil pipeline I believe.
oh, and OBL is dead!
