According to this poll at the Canadian Republic web site, public support for the monarchy has been fading for decades. In 2008 58% do not support it, 30% do. Here is the URL:

This is because in the old days the monarchy had mystery, now it's useless sentiment and Prince Charles et al are a joke.

In BC in the media in the forest industry they talk of public land, gov't land and crown land, like, what's the difference? Please educate me. Simpler is better in this complex world. Get the queen off our money.

All very good points. But the Queen will stay on the money. Politics!

I would guess that a good deal of the support for the monarchy is actually support for our Elizabeth II. She has been queen for a very long time and is very good at it. The next monarch will not have this popularity and at that time I could see us adopting some form of republic.

We pay the queen nothing. Canada is only responsible for the costs incurred (royal residences, state visits, lieutenants) inside Canada.

Get the Lizzy off the money? She's like on the 20 and coins. Can you think of a dead PM worthy of riding in your pocket? Hell, I avoided PET stamps because I wouldn't kiss his butt to post a letter.

Maybe Canadians would know more of their history if some famous Canadians and Cdn symbols were on Canadian money instead of someone who was never born in Canada.

Theoretically QE II is our head of state, until that changes she will remain on our money. Politics reign.

When was the last time you looked at Canadian money? She's on the twenty. The one and two are coins now ... and Lizzy's on all of them. Do you know whose head is on an American dime?

I think we would be much better off as a republic, but I would settle for electing senators and keeping the GG and british monarch.

Now, seriously, no one sees an issue in this?

The website "TheCanadian Republic" put a poll up and found support for the monarchy waning.

Go figure, a minority of people who go to a site about Canada becoming a republic, are in favour of the monarchy :\

Other breaking stories: Majority of people who look up pornography like pornography followed by a story about how a majority of people using Google have google as their primary search engine.

Getting rid of the monarchy.. would involve re-opening the Constitution. If anyone remembers the last time that happened in 1982, it drew out every half-assed special interest and victims group you've ever heard of and a lot you haven't. Quebec would come out with new demands for special status, separate government and vast land grants would be demanded by native groups, every ethnic community would have some demand for recognition, or apologies for past slights and monetary settlement. The provinces and federal government would go at it over division of powers, territories would demand provincial status. It would 2 or 3 years of viscous, debilitating infighting that will produce a compromise that will satisfy NO ONE. The only group SURE to be under represented are those whose foremost interest is Canada as strong and integrated federal state.

We'd end up even more balkanized than we have already become. The monarchy at least provides a symbol of continuity. What would replace it is far scarier. So.. God Save the Queen.. long may she reign.. over us.

Wrong wrong wrong.

These are scientific polls, done by Angus Reid and Ipsos Reid. Shooting the messenger here won't wash. I don't even know if the Cdn Rep org. pays a contractor. If they do, they stay at arm's from the work. That kind of logic means if the Tories pay for a poll, the result will be a majority gov't for Tories. Too funny.

To abolish the monarchy will take a larger majority, close to 70%, and first Australia and New Zealand will have to do it, then we will be dragged along. This will not happen soon, but every country has change, even Canada.
