The Carrot on the Stick 1% GST drop big deal,
1% drop on the GST is the equivalent of $18.00 per month savings big deal,
This move by Harper bragging about 1% drop when in fact it would have been more beneficial to voters to simply drop personal taxes is nothing but illusive manipulation.
In short Harper believes that all Canadians are idiots and can not identify this illusion of the 1% GST cut.
The 1% GST cut is nothing but a stupid insult to the Canadian voter.
Would you park your vote with Harper for 1% drop on GST and some dead solders in body bags fresh from Afganistan as well a bunch of Mulroney ties?
I don’t think so!

Woe there big fella...

First off, the LPoC put our boys in the sand box, under a UN mandate Harpo and company just moved them a lil futher away from the swing set.

As for ties to Mulroney...that's a bit of a leap. Harpo had as much to do with Mulroney's down fall as his arrogance did. Why does your ilk always try and deflect corruption and tie it to the wrong dog.

Might I ask why there hasn't been a commision set up to bring light to Cretiens abuse of office, for abuse of power, pandering, blackmail, racketeering etc, over Shawanigate?

Will there be any answers forth coming from you?

That 1% GST cut could have instead been transferred to civic infrastructure, public works projects, debt reduction, social housing, the homeless. . .

Most of the polling I saw said most Canadians (I haven't the numbers, or the names of the polls, so take this for what it's worth) didn't really care about the cut, merchants said it would be a pain in the ass, and most of us won't notice it anyway.

At least the GST cut will benefit those on low income with their daily purchases. Since low income individuals don't pay taxes i doubt that an "across board" tax deduction would benefit them. Besides, whether it's 1% or 1/2%, it's money in our pockets. Besides the GST cut, the exemption rates have increased dramatically, retro-active to Jan/07 and the tax rate cut by .05%. At least we're heading in the right direction.

Says who? A decrease in consumption taxes benefits those who spend money, thus helping the economy. A drop in personal income taxes, benefits those who horde money... benefiting no one.

Imagine how much Canadians would have cared if Harper had instead raised the GST by 1%. Suddenly the $18 per month that Socrates stated becomes a king's fukking ransom.

When we realy look at the choices we will have put before us on election day we can see that there is no choice except one of colour. It won't matter which mainstream party is elected the votes will in effect endorse the system which determines outcomes no matter what talking head gets elected since the system determines who gets through the sieve of the machine in the first place.
I spoke a few weeks ago with my local NDPer who will be running, the first thing that came out of her mouth was the economy, not changing it not questioning it just servicing it. It does not even belong to the electorate, she'll be working for them in a slow ponderous neverending incremental crawl that will never result in substantial social change. The government no longer belongs to the electorate it serves only the economy.

CDNBear first off I don't trip and run and I am not advocating that Harper is corrupt here.
The Libs got caught helping each other and that was wrong indisputably wrong. Mulroney is on record making his own rules of what is legal with regards his personal tax filing, if you or I did this your ass and my ass will be grass.. Harper had knowledge of Mulroneys conduct long ego but Hurper is on record saying I will not hold an inquiry against one of my predecessors and when the media pressed on him he changed his mine and said we will have an inquiry when in fact he knows an inquiry can only hurt the Torrie's potentially. Plus an inquiry will be useless after the federal election, lets not forget that!!!!!!!

I see people complaining that he threw us a bone by dropping the GST.

Tell me something: Did any of the previous governments do anything like this? Sure he dropped it by 1%.... it's better then nothing, which has been all we were getting for the last 10 years with the Liberals.... nothing. Oh, well we did have that big money scam in Quebec during the Referindumthingy.

Could he have done something better for cutting us a break? Perhaps... but at least it's something. Hell, one of his promises was to cut it by 1%.... he did that, now people are still complaining and moaning. At least he kept a promise.

I'm not for the Conservatives of the LIberals.... they're pretty much Democrat and Republicans for the US.... AKA: No real difference.

But geez... take what you can get. An average of $18 a month saved is $216 a year you could use to get something for the house or put into payments for something else.

At least he didn't increase it by 1%. If there was no mention of a tax cut to begin with, and he still got into power, this discussion wouldn't even be occuring in the first place and our lives would be going on much as it did 10 years ago (tax-wise), and we'd still have people complaining for a tax break.

You just can't win no matter what you do in politics.

Added:

oh yeah it was 2% overall not 1%... I live in Canada where we got screwed over by the BS Tax.... BST (Blended Sales Tax)

That was such a great idea from the previous government. In Atlantic Canada, we were paying 7% GST and I think it was 11% PST on many products, which bacically gave us an 18% tax we had to pay. So they thought, ok we'll blend the two together so that you only have to pay 15% BST / HST/ Whatever....

Sounded like a good idea, until everyone realized that now everything that was under GST or PST was now under HST.... so things which only were charged 7% or 11%, were now charged 15% either way. The things where we were charged 18% on we got a deal on.... but more things went up in tax, therefore we got screwed even more.

And people wonder why the Atlantic area is poor.

The question is, who here actually noticed a difference last year. I mean honestly, in the day to day run of your lives last year who noticed an extra penny on the dollar? Sure, if you buy a big ticket item, you sure will notice, but that's not the majority of Canada making those puchases.

Also, just to address another earlier point. While dropping tax rates means nothing for those who pay none, that isn't the only option on the table. Tax rates can drop, and the basic exemption can rise. Those already paying no taxes won't notice, but raising exemption means more poor people free of taxes.

The exemptions did rise.

Two excerpts from: http://www.taxes.ca/blog/archives/20..._in_1.php#more

Ottawa: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) today released projected income, payroll and sales tax changes kicking in on January 1st, 2008. Also calculated are retroactive personal income tax changes – which apply to the 2007 tax year – announced by the finance minister in the fall economic statement that saw the bottom income tax rate fall to 15% from 15.5% and the basic personal exemption – the amount a person can earn before they pay federal income tax – increase by $671, from $8,929 to $9,600.

The GST will be reduced by a further one percentage point on January 1, fulfilling the Conservatives’ marquee pledge to reduce the tax by two points. This additional cut will save the average household between $150 and $200 annually. “While some have criticized cutting the GST, it is a broad-based tax cut that puts $5-billion back in the pockets of over-taxed Canadians,” observed Williamson. “And given that this is the second point cut, the total household savings will be between $300 and $400 each year. This is good news particularly since $10-billion in the pockets of Canadian consumers is preferable to Ottawa hoarding the cash.”
