I din't see anything respectable about the man. He copied the universal healthcare idea from Tom Douglas, and introduced a Canadian flag (so what? What was wrong with the old one?). For him to be named one of Canada's greatest PM's is just astonishing. If he lasted only 4 years, chances are he isn't good. And he really wasn't.

He was ranked ahead of Chretien (who was great for the economy), Mulroney (GST was the reason of our good economy), and Borden(who saw us through world war I).

Dig a little deeper. There was a good deal more than that going on during Pearson's administration. I think you'll also find that taking Douglas' healthcare plan to the national level was originally Diefenbaker's plan, though the Liberals were back in office before he got around to doing much about it. But they recognized an idea whose time had come. LIberals freely steal good and popular ideas from anybody and everybody. Nothing wrong with that, it's routine in politics. That's how Liberals managed to be the federal government for most of the 20th century.

And just as an aside, I'm sure that's why Stephen Harper plays his cards so close to his vest. He's no fool and he's certainly a student of Canada's political history. He's not going to lay everything out there for the Liberals to steal, he won't reveal a good idea until he's ready to implement it, so the credit will go where he thinks it should. Does he have a hidden agenda? Of course he does, but it's not the one everybody who says that usually thinks it is.

I agree. Pearson was a good, capable PM. Solid policies and government. And who gives a damned where the idea first originated? The point is, who put it into play, as it were.

As an ardent opponent of the Liberal regime, it may seem odd that I will agree that Pearson was a great PM, by far over the likes of Cretien or any other, no mater the party.

I actually met him once, at a school assembly, shock his hand and all. That might have some effect on my feelings about him. Perhaps I see him as a man and not a political entity in Ottawa and that has swayed me in some way. But I do also see the merits in his time in office and out of it.

Nobel lauriate, the Canada pension plan, student loans, universal healthcare, his ground breaking work with the UN(despite my feelings on the UN), his military career in the medical corp, in the Flying corp.

What's not to idolize?

Is that your opinion LG?

It may be a poll related Canadaian opinion, but if you actually weigh merit to carisma, LBP beats PET hands down if you actually weigh beneifits created and actual good governance.

As I said, I think Turdeau hogs the role of the most overrated Liberal PM in history and yes, that is my opinion. :D Not quite awake yet, Bear?
Pearson was better than most of the others of either party.
I get ya now, my bad. I must still be sleepy, I missed what you were saying.

What upsets most people about Trudeau is the gap between what he could have done and what he actually did. Trudeau brought in the first majority government in years. He had a mandate to do anything he wanted but other than bringing home the constitution, what did he do?

Lester did accomplish a great deal while prime minister. And most of those things have benefitted us as a people. His greatest sin was to have engineered the recruitment of Pierre Trudeau. Our own little satan. The man has been the ruin of our promise.

Nobody is going to report you. Just like to mention though, while you seem to have your facts straight about most of that, he was actually our Prime Minister. Not president.
Otherwise, this bitch agrees with you.

I think Pearson and Trudeau are extremely popular back in the armpit of Toronto; after all, Trudeau in particular claimed he saved Canada or in more basic terms maintained the Empire of the St. Lawrence (Toronto and Quebec).

Those two Premiers saw the remaining provinces as loot and treated them as such and both promoted pseduo-nationalism which often came, as a result of most funding ending up in Quebec, at expense of Anglo-Canadian culture in this country.
