.... if Pierre Trudeau had not been Prime Minister and left his imprint on Canada?

Certainaly not as friendly of a place to live. He gave us a constution, national heath care policy, Margret and lots of international creds. I never like him when I was younger but in reflection I find he did make Canada a more secure place to live.

Let's see......

We wouldn't be nearly as far in debt.

Our military wouldn't lack experienced career officers.

We wouldn't be spending millions bringing French language CBC to Alberta.

We'd probably still use gallons and pounds for measurement.

It would not be acceptable for our government to use Order in Council to by-pass Parliament.

We wouldn't have a Supreme Court packed with liberal Liberals essentually passing legislation.

Quebec wouldn't feel left out of the pack.

Our allies might still trust us.

We'd have fewer idiotic gun laws.

My blood pressure would be lower.

Just for starters.

I like his charisma and personality. But overall, no, he change the way govs operate for the worse..

He was the biliingual act guy. And now we spend money having SRC (Radio-Canada), in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Vancouver...., and good solid politicians don't have a chance if they don't know the language perfectly. I found it silly, as New Brunswick and Quebec are the main French-strong holds. And most people in New Brunswick and Quebec are billingual, and only a very few amount of people in Canada don't speak English.

Gov. spending going up is right on the money.

Didn't care for his legacy... Trudeaus are like the Kennedys of Canada. VERY likeable.. but when you go beneath that.. they are not that great. I hope Justin Trudeau never come to power..

You have a high BP too, huh?
We may actually have a useful senate instead of the one we have now.
Victims of crime might actually be treated better and criminals would have difficult lives instead.

Eh 1, our healthcare system was conceived of by Tommy Douglas in 1947, long before Turdeau was PM.
1947
Under Tommy Douglas (regarded as the founder of Canada’s health care system), Saskatchewan was the first province to establish a public health care system, insuring hospital care for its population. As North America's first socialist government, Douglas and the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) promoted a Canada-wide Medicare program.
1958
The government of Canada passed legislation to contribute to provincial hospital insurance plans. Newly elected Prime Minister John Diefenbaker decreed that any province that wanted to install a hospital plan would get 50 cents on the dollar from the federal government.
1961
As of 1961, all provinces and territories insured hospital-care programs.
1962
Moving beyond hospitals, the Saskatchewan government began covering doctors’ services in 1962.
1966
Federal legislation was introduced under Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson, to cover wider medical care (Medicare) services, including doctors’ services, throughout the country.

The west may not have been alienated so often.
The CBC wouldn't have someone to idolize.

Um, I'm not much of a liberal because I think people have twisted liberalism over the past few decades, but if Turdeau hadn't become PM we may still have had classical liberalism instead of modern liberalism. Pearson was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better a PM than Turdeau, IMO.

I tried to think of words, but finally must use those of Prime Minister Chretien, for they pretty well sum up my own feelings on mr. Trudeau:

JEAN CHRETIEN: Pierre Trudeau's motto was reason over passion. But it was his passion for Canada that defined him. It was his dream of a just society that captured the imagination of the country and made the entire world sit up and take notice. Pierre, you made us young. You made us proud. You made us dream. Merci..

Yes Gil, Our heath care system was concived by Tommy D. but Trudeau gave us the national heath care act which said every province was obligated to provide that level of heath care.
I didn't really think a liberal would concive something beneficial to the people.

Canada would be a nuclear power and I don't think it would've helped the national debt too much either.

Whoopee for Turdeau. The majority of the work was done by Douglas and Pearson. So, Turdeau really didn't have to do much.
