Maurice Vellacott, M.P., the Member for Saskatoon—Wenuskewin, is set to be tossed out as the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. Mr. Vellacott is going to have the honour of being the first member of the new Government of Canada to become a casualty of the opposition parties during this Thirty-ninth Parliament of Canada, for the attacks that he had launched against the Right Honourable Beverly McLachlin, P.C., the Chief Justice of Canada.

The Honourable Anita Neville, P.C., M.P., the Member for Winnipeg South Centre and the Indian Affairs Critic for Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition, today gave notice of a motion that declares non-confidence in the member for Saskatoon—Wenuskewin as the chair of that committee, which would effectively eject Mr. Vellacott from his chairpersonship. It is reported that the three opposition parties (the Liberal Party of Canada, the Bloc Québécois, and the New Democratic Party of Canada) are going to support the motion, which would leave the Government without enough seats to save the member from the censure of the House of Commons.

:!: My Opinion Re: Censure of Vellacott

I quite agree with the endeavour of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition in this matter; Mr. Vellacott demonstrated unabridged contempt for the Supreme Court of Canada, and such behaviour should not be tolerated. No Member of Parliament should attempt to so baselessly throw the Supreme Court into disrepute, or to threaten the independence of the judiciary.

All for making correct statements about the Supreme Court in general and her in particular. Incredible. Just incredible. Freedom of speech in this country is a joke at times like this. Should be called "Politically correct Freedom of Speech" instead. Thats all that really matters.

I would remind the membership that Members of Parliament are quite welcome to offer criticism of the Supreme Court — however, personal attacks on the justices of the Court are unacceptable. The severity of this situation is quite obvious, in that this is one of the rare occasions that the Chief Justice has rebuked the comments of a Member of Parliament through her executive director.

Questions:
of those above, who got elected (by they ones ruled over)?
are the humans or higher creatures?

I prefer a working democracy over those options

An elected (not appointed) member of the house should and must have the right to utter an opinon. An elector will judge his or her comments at the time when democracy is allowed to happen.

The comments are not personal in respect to the private person of
Judge... but rather on the perception of her statements and attitudes as recorded and clearly in the puplic domain.

Nothing to do with private person etc.

The extrapolation and stretching of Constitution to fit selected current thinking is not right and undermines a solid foundation of nation. Nice red robes are no excuse for fundamental and undemographic shifts in values .
A critique is overdue and I expect elected citizen (und those at large) to make comments and engage in discussions on it.
Politics is a rough undertaking and words bite; thats what is to be expected. No reason for "huppla" and inflated outcries.
