The Bloc Québécois held one of two important upcoming caucus meetings on Wednesday, to discuss various issues of importance — including their support, or lack thereof, for the current Government of Canada. The Bloc is the only party with which the Conservative Party of Canada could align themselves and be guaranteed a majority in the House of Commons and, therefore, their support during the 39th Parliament could prove to be extremely important.
During the caucus meeting, the Bloc Québécois expressed concerns surrounding the apparent about-face of the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, P.C., M.P., the Prime Minister of Canada, in counteracting some of his own promises during the campaign. The Bloc highlights the fiscal imbalance as a key priority, one which the Tories promised to address; however, with the proposed cuts to the G.S.T., ending the childcare agreements, and the suggested measures to be taken in relation to equalization payments, could cost the province of Québec more than one billion dollars per anum.
The Bloc Québécois also highlighted the need for the current Government of Canada to facilitate a debate on the floor of the House of Commons in relation to the current mission in Afghanistan, while also demanding that the Government include a commitment to put future missions to a vote directly into the Speech From the Throne.
