Over unwarranted and inappropriate accusations, the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, M.P., P.C., the Member for Beauséjour and International Trade Critic for Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition, and the Honourable Wayne Easter, M.P., P.C., the Member for Malpeque and Agriculture Critic of the same, are demanding that the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, M.P., P.C., the Prime Minister of Canada, require an apology and dismissal-from-post of a member of his caucus.
Deepak Obhrai, M.P., the Member for Calgary East and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, accused Doctor Bernard Shapiro, the Ethics Commissioner of Canada, of causing the death of his brother-in-law.
Mr. Obhrai's brother-in-law had accused him (Mr. Obhrai) of getting him into Canada at a price of forty thousand dollars — an accusation that was reported to the Ethics Commissioner. The Parliamentary Secretary informed the Commissioner that his brother-in-law was "mentally unstable" and, therefore, his accusation should not have been considered.
However, Dr. Shapiro had a lawful obligation to inquire as to such a serious accusation; however, soonafter his interview, the brother-in-law committed suicide in India — an act which Mr. Obhrai says was the direct result of Dr. Shapiro's interview and, therefore, Dr. Shapiro was directly responsible for his brother-in-law's death.
Mr. LeBlanc and Mr. Easter are demanding that the Prime Minister dismiss Mr. Obhrai from his post as Parliamentary Secretary, and go further to demand that Mr. Obhrai issue an apology to the Ethics Commissioner for having accused him of acts tantamount to murder, and slandering his character.
