Harper to raise Mexico deaths with minister amid threat of diplomatic row

OTTAWA (CP) - Stephen Harper says he'll do whatever it takes to help solve the murder of a Canadian couple, including raising the case with Mexico's foreign affairs secretary.

The prime minister meets Thursday with Luis Ernesto Derbez. Many are calling it a botched investigation by Mexican police - including the implication of two Canadian women who say they're innocent. But Harper says the investigation is in early stages and that Mexican authorities have co-operated.

"The RCMP has been in active contact, and is in active contact, with Mexican police authorities investigating these deaths," he said. "It's been a co-operative relationship."

Opposition critics have said Harper and the Conservatives have done little to ensure the case was properly handled. Crucial evidence at the crime scene was tainted or destroyed.

But Harper says the RCMP have been in contact with Mexican police since Domenico and Annunziata Ianiero were found dead at a resort near Cancun last week.
